“Swiss Ambiance - Reasonable Prices”
Reviewed August 10, 2011

It's suprising to find this kind of charm at reasonable prices in Aspen. Everything there is expensive, but you can stay here and not break the bank! The staff was so friendly and accomodating. It actually seemed like these people enjoyed their jobs and it made it more like staying at a distant relative's place rather than a hotel. The rooms were pretty generic, but certainly adequate. I stayed in their budget accomodations without A/C and found it just fine. Yes, we had to open the window to get fresh air and you could hear the cars on the street, but really it's nothing to comlain about unless you're the fussy type. The pool and hot tub were nice amenities. And I thought breakfast was super - definitely more than just a continental breakfast. The location was great too! Very centrally located and just a block from the ski lift. If I come back to Aspen in the summer with my family I'd definitely try to stay here first.

Room Tip: Budget accomodations means no A/C.

The town of Aspen is a remarkably normal looking, typical Western style town, which is not surprising when one considers it was founded as a mining town in the 1870s. The architecture is the sort one sees in lots of towns across the USA. It is therefore quite a surprise to find such an incongruous looking hotel as the Mountain Chalet, which is built in a Bavarian/Tyrolean style quite at odds with the rest of the buildings in Aspen. It is, nonetheless, rather a charming building to see and an equally pleasing one to stay in. The room we stayed in was the second cheapest at $149 and had just a queen bed with a bed settee, a hanging rail rather than a closet and a fairly outdated look. It was, however, perfectly comfortable and the small balcony was nice to have. There is a nice, quite large and warm outdoor pool, an indoor hot tub and gym area. There is also a good guest laundry area. Another major advantage is the free underground car park. This really offers everything you need for a hotel stay in an area where there is so much to do that staying in during the day would be a sin.

I found that the big attraction of the hotel was the ambience, which was welcoming with relaxing if somewhat old-fashioned lounge areas, free beverages and cookies during the day, free internet and newspapers. The best part was the really excellent buffet breakfast included in the price that had super oatmeal in a big slow cooker, eggs and some tasty ham and egg pastry rolls as well as all the normal cereals, cold meats etc.

The location of the hotel is perfect as it is completely central to the shops and restaurants and only a couple of blocks from the ski lift, which is fantastic to use in summer as the views are fabulous. Watch out for the prices at the top where a tea, coffee and small chocolate bar cost $8. It is about 25 minutes from the major sightseeing attraction of Maroon Bells. This is apparently one of the most photographed scenes in the US, and one can see why. It is very reminiscent of Moraine Lake in Alberta. We got up early two mornings running and drove in to catch the sunrise. If one arrives about 10 minutes before sunrise you can watch the mountains go pink as long as the sky is mainly clear with some clouds. As long as you get in before 7am you can drive in and stay in, and if you have a National Parks Pass the entry is free, otherwise there is a $10 charge using the honours system (beware, someone told us they didn't pay and were charged a $50 fine). Later on, entry can only be made on foot, by bike or on a bus.

Aspen is a charming town with the main drawback being the horrendous traffic at both ends of the day. Getting into the town from the west in mid to late afternoon and morning rush hour is pretty dreadful. Fortunately, it goes mostly along Main Street a few blocks away, so Mountain Chalet isn’t really affected by it. The hotel is opposite the bus station but we were not disturbed by any noise even though we were facing the road along which the buses came. I would certainly recommend this hotel as being a very pleasant, great value for money place to stay.

Room Tip: Be sure what you want as there are a variety of rooms to choose from

We stayed at Mount Chalet for a wedding in June 2011. We had barely walked through the front door when they offered us a tray of warm fresh baked cookies. We were able to check in immediately and had a great room, they called it a MT. Garnish superior. It had a balcony with a beautiful view. There is a huge fabulous hot tub that is indoor, and a huge heated pool outdoors. Our room was promptly cleaned the second we left each morning and all of the staff was more than willing to provide directions. The wedding we attended had their reception up on the roof of the hotel and more than beautiful does not describe it. Plus our room was on teh 4th floor, directly below the reception and when we went back to our room, you couldn't hear a thing, so you can sleep well on these big comfy beds, no noise is coming in! I enjoyed the breakfast every day, simple but filling. Eggs, cereals, pastries, juice, toast, etc. Everythign was perfect and I can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: book early!

We have stayed at the Mountain Chalet for years now. You can't find a better location in Aspen. The bus station is directly across the street for taking a bus up to Maroon Bells. There is also a park directly across the street and you can walk to many shops and restaurants. The hotel is older and rustic, some might even call it a little tired, and some of the rooms and bathrooms could stand to be updated, but its perfect location, cleanliness, and the free parking, exceptional breakfast and cookies and lemonaide in the afternoons make it a great choice for your stay in Aspen. I love all the old photographs of Aspen on the walls throughout!

Room Tip: There are definitely better rooms then others and they are priced acordingly so be specific about wh...

Aspen is very expensive. This hotel was one of the less expensives around gondola. I stayed with my kids in january for sky season. The hotel has a great location, just steps away from gôndola and everything. We were disappointed by the quality of snow in Aspen Mountain. Snowmass and Aspen Highland were much better, so why pay more to stay in the heart of Aspen if we had to catch the shuttle everyday ? The thing is : if you want shopping , restaurants and night life stay at Aspen but if your main interest is skiing you can stay in a place less expensive.

Room Tip: Higher floor do not hear noise from the pool.

We have looked forward to visiting Aspen for some time and the 10 days that we spent at the Mountain Chalet from 10th to 20th July 2011 really added to the whole experience. I would have no hesitation in recommending this accommodation to anyone.....situated in the middle of the town centre, our room offered stunning views of Ajax Mountain. We spent many an hour watching the clouds roll by and looking in awe at Aspen’s outstanding beauty. The room was really well equipped with a fabulous fire which could be turned on at the flick of a switch, wonderful flat screen TV, DVD/CD player, radio/alarm clock, microwave, refrigerator, kitchen sink and a fabulous enormous bed! Breakfast at the hotel was outstanding – a great range is offered – boiled eggs, cereal, various teas, coffee, yoghurts, fruit, toast and preserves – oh and the crispy ham and egg rolls are DE-LICIOUS!!! I miss them each morning! The hotel is really relaxed and friendly – tea, coffee, juice, water and cookies are supplied each day in the lounge where there is also free internet access for guests. The pool is also wonderful (and warm!). We did have a look in at the ‘executive’ hotels in Aspen and I can honestly say that we really made the right choice when we decided to stay at the Mountain Chalet.

Marian and Ralph should be applauded – they have run this accommodation for over 50 years and their continuing attention to detail is second to none......I love this place....I would LOVE to return....even though we live 8000 miles away in England!

The whole area around Aspen is outstanding – I cannot express how beautiful it is. I have never seen anything like it. I went ballooning over the Rockies with the Above It All Balloon Company and horse riding at the T Lazy 7 Ranch on the way to Maroon Bells.....(fantastic!!!!)– we also visited the Windstar Land Conservancy in Old Snowmass which was opened to raise awareness of environmental issues and to promote a sustainable future by John Denver in the mid 70s. By the way, I highly recommend the John Denver sanctuary – what a beautiful and tranquil place. The whole experience was exquisite. Also Maroon Bells – WOW is all I can say. We also visited the Music Tent to observe part of the Aspen Music Festival which is currently underway – what a beautiful experience and a wonderful site! Also another highlight was the great “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” tour and, of course, the gondola ride up Aspen mountain – there is so much to see and do, the list is endless!

You will also love the FREE buses which whizz you around everywhere...across town, to Highlands, to Snowmass etc.

What a wonderful experience....A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL......I will never forget this tremendous time.

My love to everyone I met along the way!
Kimxxx

We were just here for a family wedding. A Very nice family run place to stay. We stay here every time we get to visit family in Aspen. The owners are usually at breakfast every morning. A GOOD "home away from home". Very close to walk anywhere in town. The special events manager also did a superb job with a view that is spectacular!

Room Tip: Apt is great for 6 people or a need to spread out. Otherwise prefer rooms on side of elevator.
