If you are not familiar with Brauhaus style, your first impression of the 2 story concrete rectangular buildings will be a reminder of your elementary school. It's a dated look with furniture to match showing its wear. It's also pet friendly so when we sat on our patio to enjoy a glass of wine we were entertained by as many as 5 dogs running around and where there are dogs there are screaming kids. So it's great for families with pets and kids but not so for a romantic getaway. On the plus side, the bed was very comfortable and the grounds are beautiful and fun to walk, plus it's 5 minute drive to the Aspen stores and resturants. After 2 nights, our opinion of the hotel changed and we did enjoy our stay.

Room Tip: Pay extra and get a room facing the mountains

looks like an old campus quad of buildings, architecture is interesting, but that is it. buildings are old, show their age, poor ventilation/AC in the summer, can be muggy if traveling at hot time of summer, front desk staff seem put out that you are even checking in or that you might ask for directions, distant from downtown activities and eateries, hidden charges when we got our credit card statement. they seem to know they're in Aspen, and resting on that point - not going above and beyond for any sort of customer service. pull away the emperor's new clothes and you realize this isn't a great place - just happens to be in Aspen.

Room Tip: Don't get a room here. Choose a room at a different resort/hotel.

The updated 50s-style resort offers spacious suites with separate entrances and outdoor decks to enjoy the serene surroundings just a short distance from downtown Aspen. Bikes, internet, pool, workout center, tennis and transportation to town are all included in an $18 additional resort fee per night. There are walking trails from the 40-acre grounds that lead down to the roaring river and to the bike trail to town. An onsite bar and restaurant offers good service and reasonably priced in-room dining.

Nicely manicured landscaping. The bed was comfortable, but the pillows were awful. Inside and out, the buildings/rooms look and feel like a dorm room. Turns out they were built for a similar use in the 1950's. The windows in the room are unlike any other hotel. Very large and clear. And some of them open. Which is great that it rained because the rooms are NOT air conditioned. The overall decor in the room, minus the bed linens, have a 1990's IKEA furniture feel. They had a shuttle every 30 mins to town. And umbrellas EVERYWHERE for use to move about the property. I found it interesting how there are signs to reuse towels to save water, and no air conditioning to save electricity. Yet, there was incredible overspray on there sprinkler system onto the driveway, after a major rainstorm.

Room Tip: No Air Conditioning in the rooms

Dear Eric F,

Thank you for your feedback. We're glad you enjoyed our beautiful setting and comfy beds. The historic Bauhaus aesthetic defines the resort and gives guests a view of the outdoors that cannot be beat. Your comments are much appreciated and we hope that you'll be back as our guest again soon.

This resort is wonderful! The Aspen Institute owns this property, but it is managed by Dolce Resorts...and they do a swell job.

Serene is the best description of the entire 40 acres located just a few blocks from busy downtown of Aspen. However, it might just as well be a thousand miles away!

If you use Priceline, you can get a spacious (500 SF) room for the price of a regular hotel room. The view is of the mountains and meadows along with various animals. It will take your breath away!

Room Tip: Ask for Rooms in: Catto or Whitmore or Malott. They are the more remote buildings (2 story with no...

I would like to live here...Herbert Bayer earthwork, artwork, and architecture. Clean modern lines of hotel balanced by gorgeous natural setting with huge Aspen trees and lots of open space. Great point to start an early morning hike or run, swim at the health club or tennis on the conscientiously design tennis courts which sit above the underground parking. Pedestrian only access to rooms -makes for a private and meditative stay. Check out a bike for up to 4 hours free and buzz around town or around the trails. Rooms are spacious with kitchenette. Pet friendly. Not pretentious, just quietly everything you need. Planning the next trip already.

Room Tip: Our room faced the river and rustling aspen - good for sleeping.

My husband and I have stayed here a few times for business. It's in a beautiful setting, right on great walking trails. The grounds are well maintained and interesting. It's well designed in a sort of 50s Bauhaus style. The rooms are large and all have patios or balconies. The food is good and not too expensive. The gym and pool and are small but perfectly OK, and the hot tub is great.

This place has a lot of character. It's not trying to be somewhere else: No posters of Paris or fake Victoriana like so many other places. It's a little banged up, but for me that just adds to the realness of the place. If and when I go back to Aspen, I'll stay here again for sure.

Room Tip: I like the second-floor rooms with a view that are not too close to the conference center.
