i love to drive. This route from sante fe to aspen over independence pass is breath taking. You feel like you are going to fall off the face of the earth around some of the hairpin turns. Awesome views at the top and the drive down to aspen is terrific.

Thank Jeff H

My husband and I made our first trip over Independence Pass in the mid 1970s. At that time the road was about 1 1/2 lanes wide for most of the trip, and guard rails were few to none. We have never forgotten the one switchback where we met a truck coming the other way, and one of us had to back up around those bends until there was a wide enough place for us to get by each other. Since the truck was a lot bigger than we were, guess who did the backing up? It wasn't pleasant After that, I insisted on taking the long way to Aspen through Glenwood Springs.

On our recent trip from Denver to Aspen, my husband insisted that we take the Pass saying that much work had been done on the Pass, and it was now not that big a deal. And, he was right. There is only a very small section left of the old, narrow road, but that is not on a particularly high or windy part of the Pass. The scenery is Rocky Mountain High beautiful; I don't think we will be taking the long way via Glenwood Springs anytime again. Don't forget to stop at the top of the Pass at the Continental Divide. Aside from the scenery at the "top of the world", you'll be in for a temperature shock and find yourself huffing and puffing on your short walk because of the altitude. Definitely make this stop.

The Pass is closed for a good part of the year, so if you're going anytime except summer, make sure you check to see if it is open, or you will REALLY be going to Aspen the long way.

If you are exploring beautiful Colorado, do not miss Independence Pass! The pass normally opens in late May and is well worth the drive. We started at Twin Lakes, (on the East side) beautiful and surrounded by mountains, green meadows, and if your timing is good, wildflowers! Twin Lakes historical district has some great historical buildings, a restaurant and inn, a general store and few small businesses. The summit and overlook is absolutely breathtaking! "When" I travel this again, I will start from the West side at Aspen. When we came down the pass into Aspen, there was a lot of traffic due to the fact that the highway goes right through Aspen and it's only one lane! Although well worth everything, now we know for next time. Highly recommended!

Take this route from Denver! Truly the most beautiful drive for the family! I would only do this during the day as scaling the mountains may be a bit dangerous at night!

Worth the drive along very narrow and curvy roads! The view is great! Be sure and walk slow with plenty of water if not use to 12,103 feet high! The wildflowers in July were beautiful.
