Had a wonderful three nights in Aspen (mid-November is a great time of the year to enjoy the town) and surprised ourselves by eating at the same place - Jimmy's bar - twice. The reason is that Jimmy's has a different special each night of the week and my wife had the Thursday night special - barbequed lamb (shanks, I think) - and raved about it to our charming wait staffer. She told us that if we liked Thursday's come back on Saturday for prime rib (with potatoes and veggies) for $14.00. That's a great price anywhere and beyone belief for Aspen. (And it was very tender, not fatty prime rib.) The accompanying mixed vegetables were thinly sliced and very lightly sauteed, not at all the overcooked mush you usually get for mixed vegetable sides. And a very extensive menu , both food and drinks, in the bar.
A lot of good things to say about it Jimmy's, but the comments are limited to the bar service; we did not eat in the dining room. The bar was crowded, pretty noisy, and a lot of fun. We sat perched on backless stools at a table the first night and at the bar the second. Bar was more fun because the bartenders are very personable and Jimmy himself was working there a lot of the time on Satruday. A very enjoyable host with a lot to say about the drinks he serves. We had mules both nights and I ended up with about the best mojito ever whipped up by Kayla.
A number of Aspen restaurants have separate bar service, sometimes with a slightly different menu, sometimes with exactly the same food. In either case it's about 75% or less of the cost of moving into the dining room and eating about the same stuff. At the bars it's crowded, noisy, no reservations and the best way to eat in Aspen and not have to hock your car. It certainly is not a quiet, intimate experience but it sure is fun if you're in the mood.
Very good food, reasonable price, great, personable service, and try the specials, especially the prime rib.
