Description: Say "apres ski" and most people picture something strikingly similar to Ajax Tavern - glamorous yet easy. Its sun-drenched, mountainside patio can be seen from halfway up the mountain - a simple target for lunch or cocktails. Arrive, and let the people-watching begin, there's no better seat in town. Located right next to the Silver Queen Gondola, Ajax Tavern is the hub for casual fine dining in an unbeatable atmosphere. The Tavern comes to life at lunch, and the party rolls on well into the night. If you go no further on the menu, try the truffle fries and Ajax double cheeseburger - they earned their reputation.

My family (me, wife and 2 teenagers) decided to stay a couple of days in Aspen. Because we had difficulty getting Friday night reservations at Jimmy's and Ute City, we made reservations at Ajax. For the four of us (with tip), the cost was $140 (no deserts and my wife had one glass of wine). The food took a long time to arrive, and when it did, it was luke warm at best. The taste was also inferior to most other restaurants we have visited. I don't mind paying a premium for good qualty food, but this was pathetic. You don't want to go here. The next day, we had lunch at Ute City and dinner at Jimmy's. Both were excellent and much more reasonable.

The location of Ajax Tavern is great. You can easily get there from most hotels and from the bottom of the slopes of Ajax Mountain itself. So, if you want to get a delicious lunch and are tired of the usual eating halls on the slopes, this is a great option. When you are done with your lunch, you step back into your skis and hop the gondola back to the top. The food and service are excellent. They are known for their truffle oil, hand cut fries and the gruyere cheese fondue (in single or group servings). Like the rest of the restaurants in Aspen, truffle oil-something is on the menu. They also have a good wine selection, by the bottle or the glass. Beer enthusiastic should seek beverages elsewhere.

Ate there with my wife on Sat, Oct 17, 2009. Ordered the NY strip steak. Was smaller than advertised (12 oz) and loaded with grissle. Service was fine, but don't order the steak!

Just ate here for dinner--4 adults, 6 kids. The service was terrible. We waited a very long time for our drinks and when we asked for information on the kids menu--how big the portions were, etc, the waitress was rude and very unhelpful. We ended up sharing portions for kids, but we were charged for full portions. We asked to see the manager and waited at least 15 minutes to see her. She was also rude and unhelpful when she arrived. The food tasted good, but we were so upset with how we were treated that it left a bad tast in our mouth. Never would we eat here again. There are too many other good choices in Aspen.

We ate here twice during our trip and had a fab meal both times. The service was great and so was the food/wine. We took our 3 young children and felt very comfortable doing so. The live music was a nice addition to the evening.
