We rode from aspen to Basalt with a pit stop at the woody creek tavern. Great bar with outside seating. Rio Grande trail is super easy from aspen down valley, but the ride back is deceivingly difficult if you are not used to the altitude.

We rented bikes at Aspen Sports (quick and efficient) by the gondola in Aspen and rode to Woody's Tavern for lunch. It was around 8 1/2 miles there. It seems mostly flat on the way and we rode pretty fast. (stopping just to take some beautiful photos) You do have to watch for slow bikers and walkers who take up the whole path. After lunch, we biked back which is a bit more challenging. Right after eating at Woody's, you make a pretty steep (though short) climb followed by a more moderate, but longer, climb. After that it pretty well levels off. Coming back into Aspen you are greeted by another steep climb (longer). Talked to a number of folks who have never biked back because they thought it was too difficult; we are in good shape but don't do much cycling and we did fine.
There are scenic bridges, wildflowers, a nice ride beside the river, and generally beautiful scenery all along the way. Highly recommended. With lunch, it took us a little less than three hours round trip.

Hop on your bike and head south from downtown Aspen. This is a FLAT but very scenic path along the Roaring Fork river. Very suitable for flatlanders like me.

We are casual bicyclists and didn't want to ride from Glenwood to Aspen, which is an elevation gain of 2,000 feet, so we drove to Aspen with our bikes and started the trail there. The first section of the ride is all downhill and a lot of fun. The trail is well groomed, mostly paved, and not difficult. We rode all 40 miles to our motel in Glenwood. Including a coffee stop in Carbondale, we spent five hours on the trail. I started complaining after 30 miles about how tired I was, but I am out of shape, so I think it would be a breeze for someone in shape. We hopped the bus back to Aspen to pick up the truck ($7 a person).

Great trail to walk or bike on. I think biking is the way to go. The creek is beautiful - There are plaques telling about the trail along the way.
