“Easy hike with stunning view!”

From the parking area, or shuttle stop, it's a fairly short walk through a wildflower meadow to the lake. The lake is a lovely spot itself. The view of the Mararoon Bells from the lake is stunning! The walk to the end of the lake is not long and the far end of the lake is a sweet spot with a little bridge, a bench, and a beaver dam.

If you want to hike farther, head up to Crater Lake, or take the (shaded) Maroon Creek trail form the parking area.

You don't need to walk far to soak in the amazing beauty of the area. Easy stroll around the lake. Wildflowers, streams a beaver dam, Aspen trees, the Maroon Bells. What more is there.

If you live in Colorado, you have to come to Maroon Bells and hike to scenic Maroon Lake and to Crater Lake. Arrive before 9 am and you can park at the trailhead. You can get free admission with a military ID (even as a Reservist). Dogs are welcome on the trails (on a lease).

At a friend's recommendation, we hopped off the bus to hike the trail up to the Lake (bus driver warned us most folks hike down). We hiked up E. Maroon Creek Trail and thought it strange when we lost site of the road (and encountered no other hikers) and didn't seem to be approaching the Bells. Turned out we missed the turn to the Lake Trail, hiked for about an hour too long, and missed the last shuttle of the day. We decided to relive our youth and hitchhike. Fortunately, a couple squeezed us into their Prius (w/ mt. bike) and gave us a ride back to the Highlands parking lot. Saved my marriage and gave us a great story to share. Other than that, the hike was fantastic w/ great wildflower pix to share.

I loved it, although the difficulty was more than expected. Even after weeks living in high altitude, it still took the breath out of me. The trail is stony and goes up for quite a while. My wife gave up and turned around, but most people should be able to do it with no problems. The views at lakeside are gorgeous.
