we went on to do crater lake after Maroon Bells. The trail is moderate,at times, easy. This may be why there were so many families on the trail. beautiful scenery and wildflowers.

Visiting Maroon Bells? One you've come to Maroon Lake, you can take an additional hike up to Crater Lake. It's about 1.5 miles, not strenuous, but more demanding than the Maroon Lake walk. When you get there, put your feet in the icy-cold water and you'll be quickly revived!! The scenery both along the way and at the lake is nothing short of stunning!

This hike is a must-do if you are in the Aspen or Snowmass area. The views are unbelievably gorgeous. The hike is not strenuous if you are in reasonably good shape....we had hiked to the top of Aspen Mountain the previous day, which I would call a difficult hike, but this is more like 'moderate'. It is steadily uphill but not too steep, although very rocky. My only suggestion would be to be sure and wear proper footwear. The rocks make for some unsteadiness which could result in a twisted ankle if your shoes aren't sturdy. We saw a couple folks in flip flops, which I would imagine to be very uncomfortable on the rough terrain! This hike is an absolute must on your trip to Aspen!

Moderately strenuous with emphasis on strenuous, to an Easterner over 60 --- but richly rewarding in midsummer to come upon the beautiful backcountry lake as families play on its shores in the joy of their mutual achievement. Advise stiff-soled shoes for rocky trail -- and 2 water bottles, and some foodstuff to revive you at the lake. Spend $20 at WalMart for a trekking pole or two -- oh, the elitist folly of central Colorado to make WalMarts unwelcome. Capricious morality is the plaything of the rich, and the chief offense of discount stores is the class of persons they serve so well. . . Many people complete the hike to Crater Lake, but few are over 60. Don't sneer at popular trail; it's gratifying to be surrounded by many who exactly how the feat you just performed.

We did this on the Fourth weekend as the beginning of a climb of North Maroon. You should have some basic supplies with you as you always should and decent trail runners or light hiker. No flops. The further you get away from the masses the better so just be prepared. If you complain about the trail hiking is not for you.
