Steam Train Hotel
Ranked #3 of 4 Antonito B&B and Inns
Reviewed September 12, 2011

My wife and I stayed two nights at the 1911 Steam Train Hotel with another couple in late August. Cliff (the owner) has done a nice job renovating and updating the rooms and providing a comfortable communal area to get together for coffee and/or drinks. We stayed in room #1 which is the only one that faces Main street and in spite of having our windows open there was little in the way of noise to disturb our sleep. This hotel is not air conditioned but the walls are thick and even with day temperatures in the 80's the unit was kept comfortable with the overhead fan. One needs to be aware that the rooms are on the second floor and there are about 20 stairs up which you will need to carry your suitcases. Antonito is a very small town and this has to be the best hotel in town.

Room Tip: Room #1 has a full kitchen and a door between the bedroom and kitchen/living room

Having stayed 3 times before in Antonio at another hotel, this trip i was determined to find a place the was better than the railroad inn. It was easy to book online, with helpful staff. Upon arriving to the hotel me expectations were blown away. The lobby that was a old bank still had the vault in it. Staff went out of their way to be helpful and get us to our rooms. I asked where the ice was, and the man who checked us in said he would bring it to the room. Each one of the rooms are different and built by the owner. Each room would remind you of a 5 star hotel. We had four in our party and needed a ride back to the train station in the morning. The owner Cliff not only came in but gave us a tour of the future parts of the hotel. He gave us a ride right to the track and even carried some bags to our rail car. THIS IS THE ONLY HOTEL TO STAY AT IN ANTONITO!!

We stayed for 4 nights and really enjoyed every minute of it. We loved the 'Old Fashion' Hotel with very modern amenities. The fact that there are only 9 or 10 rooms was really nice. I think people are treated much better at a smaller hotel. They made me feel like they really appreciated my being there and not only remembered my name, but what room I was in as well. The town was a lot of fun too. We got to see the home Sean Connery and River Phoenix were at in the movie 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' as well as the steam train in that movie. We also went to the Great Sand Dunes. W O W ! ! ! Amazing… We also did a little fishing in a stream surrounded by the most beautiful view. As a matter of fact, there was a diverse selection of ‘beautiful views’ in the area. I thought it was going to be a quiet, relaxing, boring trip. Instead, we found too much to do in the time we were there, so we need to go back to the hotel in the spring. What a great place.

Room Tip: The rooms with kitchens are a great way to save some money on eating out.

The hotel had a good decor and the rooms were nice. It was hard to sleep as the hotel sits right on the main street and the traffic is loud. It was also hot in the room as it did not have air conditioning, we opened the window but that did not help much. The owner and his girl friend gave us a tour of the rest of the hotel, and it was just a little odd with all the stories. I think if we go back to Antonito we will stay else where.
