Owner description: Built in 1880 and little changed since, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is the finest and most spectacular example of steam era mountain railroading in North America. Its equipment, structures and vast landscape exist today as if frozen in the first half of the 20th century. USA Today readers voted Cumbres & Toltec the Best Scenic Train Ride in America. Climb aboard this National Historic Landmark for a 64-mile day trip you’ll never forget. Our coal-fired steam engine carries you through steep mountain canyons, high desert, and lush meadows as you zig zag between the Colorado and New Mexico border. Open your eyes to spectacular and rare Western scenery which can only be viewed from this train’s unique route. Ride in the Victorian elegance of our deluxe parlor car or choose the budget-friendly coach car. Either way, a delicious buffet lunch is included. Trains depart daily from Chama, NM and Antonito, CO, from late May’s blooming wildflowers through the golden leaves of October.

We did the round trip: Train from Antonito to Chama and bus back to Antonito. Would highly recommend this trip. We bought tickets close to the day we wanted to take the trip, so there were only seats at the lowest price. We thought we would have liked the middle priced seats, but we were completely happy with the seats we had.

We were there early October and the trees' colors were beginning to change. It was beautiful and was probably even more so the week or so after we were there. The landscape was really spectacular once the train is away from Antonito, so don't be disappointed at first. The best is yet to come.

There are volunteer docents on board to give information about the RR and answer questions.

Lunch is included at the stop in Osier. It was good and they are prepared for a lot of people to move through quickly.

It was a wonderful trip.

This trip is a family heaven. We stayed in Antonito, took the bus to Chama and did the complete trip. Decent value--breathtaking scenery. A Colorado must for a family.

What an adventure and a wonderful peek at history! This beautifully preserved railroad took us back to the late 1800s with it's classic steam locomotives and period passenger cars. The open car was a treat, giving us a full view of the gorgeous scenery. The view of Toltec Canyon (inaccessible by car) was spectacular as we hung on the side of the mountain. Highly recommend the trip!

This classic steam railroad takes you to another time and place when steam was king, and railroading was how all goods and services moved. Traversing between New Mexico and Colorado, the train crosses state lines more than 11 times. You get to enjoy the vistas, wildlife, rock formations, canyons, forest, brooks and rivers from an outdoor open car (if you don't mind the dust), or from the comfort of a passenger car. The most beautiful scenery of any steam railroad! And buffet lunch at 11,000 feet! Stay in Chama, ride to Antonito, and take the bus back. You won't regret it.

Very little to add to other reviews. We had a great trip and didn't spend very long in our seats but were still pleased we'd paid the extra for Parlor class.

Our only gripe was lunch which we thought was sub-standard. A good bagged picnic would have been better.
