I've taken many trips around Colorado to ride, photograph and experience the heritage railroads. Rio Grande Scenic Railroad is not Narrow Gauge, but offers a fun ride between Alamosa and LaVeta, Colorado over LaVeta Pass. The problem I have with the railroad is their inability to accurately indicate which train locomotives they intend to run for any particular visit. They have a vintage steam locomotive and lets face it, that's what the real attraction is. But those old locomotives are expensive to maintain and operate, so I'm guessing they cut back on how often it runs. Still, their web site should be more forthcoming about their steam schedule. On a number of occasions, I've contacted them by phone and they are very slow to return call regarding their equipment schedules, and more often than not, they've given incorrect information when they did return calls. If you're looking for a nice rail ride on some vintage equipment, I'd recommend you look to the Cumbres & Toltec railroad which operates out of Antonito, Colorado less then 35 miles away. It's a better ride and you're far more likely to have a steam locomotive to enjoy.

Thanks for taking some time to let us know your experience. You are absolutely right, steam locomotives are very expensive to operate and maintain. During the winter months, we operate our vintage diesel engine which is much less costly and we pass those cost savings onto our customers and focus on the on-board events. We operate the steam engine during the summer months for our full-day excursions and for photo opportunities, we have our Photographer's Spectacular in September which is 3 days of specially designed photo run-bys and special events. I have passed your comments along to management because we do take our reservation agent training very seriously and want to ensure accurate information.

Thanks!

We took the Rio Grand Scenic Railroad trip from Alamosa to La Veta on the Saint Patrick's Day tour. It was an all-day enjoyable trip through mountains to the little town of La Veta where several art galleries and a few gift shops entice lookers. The dome car is an upgrade which we thought was worth the $20pp extra for the views. Food and drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic are available at very reasonable prices. Lunch was very good and choices varied. Luckily, the car was not full so we appreciated more space - seats and a table for four. In high season it could be crowded.

We attended the Concerts in Fir, Co; departing from LaVeta. Great entertainment; great views and overall fantastic day of scenic beauty and great music. Can't say enough about this venue. Hoping they will continue the Concert tours in Summer, 2013

If you have an opportunity to take a train ride on the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad do not hesitate to do it. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and prompt with their services. They came around and talked to all of the guests in the car we were riding in. The food was excellent and the price more than reasonable. We are thinking about taking another journey on one of their other lines.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such kind words about our railroad! We hope to see you aboard one of our other lines across the US and hope that you find them just as wonderful as the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad!
Happy Travels!

The all day train ride round trip from Alamosa to La Veta, provides a nice change from auto touring. It is a leisurely trip, with great scenery encountered as the train crosses the Sangre de Cristo mountains, a scenic route through largely roadless remote terrain.
