The mountains around LA are worth exploring and you don't need a 4WD. The Crystal Lake Drive up route 39 with stops to hike is well worthwhile although Crystal Lake itself is disappointing. We planned a 4-5 hour trip from Pasadena and extended to dusk because its great wilderness and we got lunch at the snack bar. The website: http://www.crystallake.name/ is great resource. If you want to hike or bike plan your trip. Bear Creek trail is well worth it although exposed to the elements. West Fork trail is an easier hike where you see lots of families with kids. There are toilet facilities at the start of each of these.
The trading post has been taken over by the snack bar and has outdoor seating and a warm area inside heated by a restored potbelly stove.
The snack bar serves standard American fare but has specials that are worth experiencing. They had a Chili soup, burritos, sandwiches, good coffee, drinks as well as some Turkish pied, BBQ chicken and ribs and vegetarian specials. In the Summer, they apparently do barbecue outside for lunch and have a supply of ice. The guys make a special effort for children's needs. i
We plan another trip but will you for breakfast - it opens at 8am. Prices are very reasonable all the more so because of where it is. Burrito was about $6. Cash only, no credit cards. Its at about 5500ft. Cell phone service is spotty, apparently they will let you use phone inside in an emergency.
We just learned that Caltrans may walk away from Rte 39 because of maintenance costs. This would be tragedy - the road is currently in good condition - 2 lanes and fully paved. Go there while you can!
