Dear William,

Thank you for your review! I am so happy that you enjoyed your stay with us. Although our rooms can be on the higher price end during the summer months, our prices are comparable to many other hotels in the area who simply don't offer the level of amenities that the La Fonda does.

We recently upgraded our guestrooms and suites with all new Serta Platinum Mattresses. We replace our mattresses every 2-3 years whereas most hotel replace theirs every 5-10 years. This is a one of the many ways we are constantly improving upon the guest experience to ensure that each and every guest is satisfied to the fullest extent.

We invite you to join us during our off season for great specials. September through March you will find that the Avila La Fonda Hotel is quite reasonable, plus you get the beach all to yourself!

Best regards,

Christopher King | General Manager

A few lessons learned:

1) This is a beautiful hotel and has a few phenomenal staff members (Evan and Brian). However, if you book at this hotel, REQUEST TO NOT STAY IN ROOMS 108 and 109! These are next to the laundry room, so they are extremely loud. The rooms are dark and you can't open the blinds because the windows look right onto the sidewalk. Despite knowing it was our 1 year wedding anniversary, the hotel still booked us into this room. Not the quality of service you expect at $400/night.

2) We have to thank Evan and his friend Brian who offered exceptional service in making right this problem that never should have happened in the first place. Evan was extremely understanding, and he is the only reason we would ever consider returning to La Fonda. He also offered to help us re-book at a different hotel and offered a great suggestion which worked out wonderfully and saved our anniversary trip.

3) When we first complained about being booked into one of the dungeons, the lady who works at the front desk at this hotel offered the worst service we have ever experienced at ANY hotel. She simply recited their cancellation policy and told us there was nothing she could do. I told her that those cancellation policies exist to prevent no-shows, not to penalize dissatisfied customers. When we asked to escalate the problem, she lied to our faces about contacting her manager (Chris). We know she didn't contact him because Evan called him several minutes later to save the day. She also lied when we asked about switching us into a different room. She said everyone else had checked in, but we watched her check in three more guests while we waited in the lobby.

Room Tip: Request to not stay in rooms 108 or 109!

First and foremost I want to thank you for taking the time to let us know about the issues that you experienced. I can understand how frustrating this must have been for you, and I want you to know that we strive to provide the best experience possible for each and every single guest that we come into contact with here at the Avila La Fonda Hotel.

I am so happy that Evan and Brian were able to save the day by finding you alternative lodging at our sister property due to these unfortunate circumstances. Regarding the issues you experienced with one of our Guest Service Manager's, I can assure you that she was never untruthful with you. She did contact me and asked for a solution, when she explained that there were no other Spa rooms available I informed her that my solution would be to ask you what we could do to make things right for you, which it sounds like was finding you an alternative hotel to enjoy your one year anniversary. Because we we're 100% full and due to the specific room time that you reserved we simply had no other options available at that time.

I would like to extend my deepest apologies and ask that you please contact me directly so that I can make things right for you. Please email me directly at manager@avilalafondahotel.com or call me directly (805) 595-1700.

The Avila La Fonda Hotel in Avila Beach, CA really impressed us with their over the top amenities and service. We travel often for work and have the opportunity to stay at many fine inns, bed and breakfasts and boutique hotels. I was blown away by everything the La Fonda offers. We had beautiful breakfast scones, fresh juices and coffee every morning. In the afternoon they laid out the nacho bar with fresh fruit margaritas, beer and all the nachos and guacamole one could eat. Later, they had ample appetizers and wine from 5 to 7 pm. Then, if you were STILL hungry, you could come in for fresh baked fruit pies. In addition to all of that, we had a huge goodie basket awaiting us when we arrived and when we left the sent us on our way with gourmet chocolates.

I wouldn't pay much attention to the review from SFSpee about the rooms. They were beautiful rooms and fit the property perfectly. You simply won't find this level of serivce and generosity at most places. And, yes...they had TWO turn downs - a morning and evening service where you could stipulate exactly what you wanted take care of for you while you were out on the beach. And, if you do go to the beach, they have lovely, soft beach towels and Tommy Bahama beach chairs for you to borrow and take with you!

Worth every penny!

The La Fonda Hotel in Avila is a sure bet. The facilities are wonderful, clean, well decorated, and comfortable. You cannot beat the customer service and hospitality. Have stayed multiple times and every time has been a fantastic experience. They go above and beyond to make an excellent stay.

We really wanted to love this hotel, we needed a beach town getaway, and this one came so highly recommended. And we DID love Chris and the kind staff and the great amenities, we almost never needed to go out to eat, we could pretty much eat at their happy hour, the late night pies, the afternoon snacks, the morning croissants. Also, we were able to use the washer dryer in the evenings that the maids use during the day, which was really a nice perk. Also, we loved the towels. Ok, now, THE ROOM. There was just nothing upscale or comfortable about it. We couldn't stand to be in it. It was incredibly dark, we were on the first floor and right on the front sidewalk outside (which was quite busy) also right near the back door, stairs, and maid room, which were loud. The jacuzzi was difficult to get into and not great for 2 people. The bed was uncomfortable, the shower was small, the furniture was cheap, and the air conditioner was like a portable unit we kept tripping over. It was such a shame to have the room conditions really drag down our stay when everything else was so nice. We don't spend a lot of time in the room, but when we do, we want it to be inviting.

Room Tip: Demand an upstairs room!
