Wow, what a gem! My wife and I were anxious to see the central coast and attend a wedding at a local winery, but we had a difficult time leaving the room. James and Fred were terrific and very helpful with getting situated and made the experience even better.

We plan to be back, no matter where we stay on the central coast.

I live 10 minutes down the road from La Fonda, but wanted a relaxing weekend 'away'! It doesnt even seem right to call this a HOTEL... more like a home away from home...but nicer.

The front desk is literally a DESK, very easy and comfortable. Checking in was easy, they have a great discount for any one with a costco card, but never actually asked for it.

Ok, there was only ONE thing i didnt like about la fonda, there is absolutly NO ocean veiw, not even a peek of one...but your surrounded by hotels that do, but none of them even compare in luxury to la fonda, so i was fine... it was a block away and thats close enough for me.

THINGS I LOVED: Best bathtub EVER!! huge jacuzzi tub, wonderfull towels and robes, the shower was great, big seperate with multiple heads. There is a pretty stained glass window in the bathroom, lights up the room softly ...
A kitchen that has everything! stainless steel fridge, dishwasher, microwave, blender, a coffee machine w a grinder and fresh coffee beans! Dishes, wineglasses EVERYTHING.
There was a 'snack basket' when you walk in , it was full of sooo much fun stuff for FREE... popcorn, sodas , waters, candybars, pretzels, cheese and crackers....soo much more:)
The bed was a murphy bed which made me nervous, but was amazing comfy and easy to open and close.
Fireplace, flatscreen tv, ipod bose system.
Anytime day or night if you go into the lobby, they have a beautifull room set up with free homemade (sorta) choc. chip cookies!
Had a dinner party one night, room for everyone to mill, and their fav. part was the 'CHOCOLATE CLOSET'... how fun does that sound?? its a small pantry on the first floor, open 24 hrs, its on a honor system... take what you want and put a paper w your room# in a jar, easy. They have EVERY KIND OF CHOC. plus more! Truffles , see's candy, huge choc. muffins, candy bars + frapachinos, waters , sodas , juices, milk , burritos, sandwhiches...a ton more i cant remember and seriously everything was like 75cents, cheap!

I know it sounds funny to be sooo excited about free/cheap snacks, but i have stayed all over the world, and you get so used to hotels robbing you blind, $3 waters that you thought were complimentary...but la fonda is polar opposite... its nice to let your gaurd down:)

Mmmm. what else? They leave alot of the unoccupied rooms doors open so you can walk around and see what they all look like, they actually encourage it, kinda fun. I called down to ask if i could have a late check out, they said no problem , when do you wanna leave? They gave me a 2 pm checkout, I asked if they sold alchohol they said no but brought me up a complimentary bottle of champaign... FUN.

Think that covers it, loved it, would reccomend it to anyone!

  • Liked — Cute neighborhood, Huge bathtub, FREE chocolate everywhere:)

We just got back from our most recent stay at Avila La Fonda. We have stayed at this hotel three times now, and now consider it the perfect place to go for a quick get away. I have read several of the other reviews, and I must say that the few negatives mentioned are slightly exagerated. The rooms with balconies opening near the street are a little noisier, but they are also very convieniently located near the hotel amenities. There is always some give and take in any hotel based on the location of the room. We have stayed on the first floor near the street (partial ocean view and very near books and DVD's), and on the second floor away from the street (very quiet and private), and loved both. I have to say that the positives greatly outway the negatives. In fact, I must say the quality of the rooms and friendliness of the staff alone make this the best hotel I have ever stayed in.

We spent three nights at this lovely small hotel, where we enjoyed one of the "spa rooms" which we got at an astonishingly good rate for Costco members.

Avila Beach is a very small community which is, as I understand it, built on the site of a catastrophic oil spill that basically necessitated bulldozing everything in the town and starting over. There's a two-block esplanade and pier at the beach, about three restaurants, a bunch of new condos, and a couple of hotels. It's very, very quiet--definitely not for those in search of a busy beach scene.

The hotel is two blocks from the beach, and although it's somewhat junky new construction (the slight vibration in the floors makes me suspect all their pretty saltillo tiles will crack in the near future), the decor and other appointments are first-rate. Every room has a jacuzzi tub, shower with two shower heads, heated towel rack, flat-screen TV and DVD player, gas fireplace, microwave and mini-fridge, and REAL plates, cups, silverware, etc. In the lobby there's a library of DVDs and books, and a lounge area where coffee, juice, and cookies are available 24/7. Each room has a balcony, though the hotel's location means that many of these, as other reviewers have noted, are not as lovely as the rooms' interiors. Our balcony looked out over the public beach parking lot, and I imagine that in the high season it would be quite noisy and not particularly private.

The room itself, however, was so cozy that we almost didn't want to go the the beach! The Mexican-style furniture was elegant, the bedding and towels were super-luxurious, the fireplace was cheery, the basket of snacks was tasty, and the scented candles made lounging in the in-room spa tub a sybaritic delight. Really, we can't say enough about how much we enjoyed our stay, and we'll absolutely return the next time we visit the central coast.

  • Liked — elegant, comfortable room
  • Disliked — location between street and parking lot

We have just returned from a four day stay at the Avila La Fonda Hotel. I wanted to write this review first to compliment the staff for their wonderful service. They truly did try and meet our every need. That said there is just nothing they can do to fix the fact that the hotel has very thin walls, so much so that they have to declare quiet times so people can sleep. We happened to have a neighbor who enjoyed having early morning business calls on the provided speaker phone, so we never got to sleep past 7am on any day of our vacation. Needless to say if you do decide to try Avila La Fonda out bring your ear plugs!

  • Liked — Staff was Fantastic
  • Disliked — Rooms are really loud. You can hear everything going on in the hotel.

We arrived at La Fonda after a fabulous 3 night stay at the Inn of the Spanish Gardens in Santa Barbara. We did lots of research on Tripadvisor prior to booking with La Fonda so we expected a wonderful experience but were quite disappointed. We stayed in room 104 which was right on the street. People who were walking by could not resist looking in so we closed the drapes which made it very dark and stuffy. Not what we were looking for in beautiful sunny California. We had a wonderful fireplace and spa tub but it was too hot in the room to enjoy them, along with no privacy. We tried to have our room switched but they explained that they book the rooms on a first come/first serve basis so the best rooms are booked first. When we checked out the person did not ask us how are stay was so we left feeling like the customer was not a priority. A few days after we returned I received an automated email asking for feedback. I gave them this same feedback but never heard back from them. I suggested that they disclose the issues with the rooms facing the street when people book and offer them at a discount. This way the person can decide if they still want to stay. We felt ripped off. I'm guessing with a different room it would have been a different experience.

We really fell in love with this place and ended up staying an extra day. Complimentary goodie basket, super-comfy bed, amazing tub with candles and dimmer switch in the bathroom, hospitality suite w/evening wine/hors d'oeuvres reception and very friendly staff, plus so many other extras. They even had a slice of birthday cake with a candle in our room upon arrival b/c we were celebrating my husband's birthday. Two caveats: 1) If you're very heat sensitive, don't go in the hot season, as there are only fans and no A/C. 2) If you're very noise sensitive, pick a room away from the street and the front entrance on the weekends. Neither of these things detracted from our stay, but we always bring earplus and didn't mind the daytime warmth. A truly wonderful find, and we've tried a lot of hotels in the San Luis Obispo/Monterey Bay/Pismo area. Also, try to get the Costco rate; we saved a good chunk that way.
