“Trolley to the lighthouse”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2014

Riding up to the lighthouse on the trolley was great. Great views and little bits of history provided on the way up. Once at the lighthouse seeing everything and learning the history of the lighthouse was wonderful. The trolley runs Wed & Sat. I recommend going for the views alone. But the history about it was very nice too..

“Delightful surprise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2014

This lighthouse is on private property and hidden from view. So you either have to kayak, hike or pay for a seat on the scenic trolly to get there. We chose the trolly. What a delight! The drive itself on the windy 1-lane road alone was worth the price. You are on the northern tip of San Luis Bay, and the views are incredible. We were lucky to go on a particularly clear day. The ride is narrated by a knowledgable and fun docent. Once you arrive it's a short walk to the lighthouse. Our group was split up into smaller groups as we did our docent-lead tours. These docents are very knowledgable! There's so much to see on site, you get a real feel for what it must be like to live out there back in the 1890's. They also have a beautifully restored Fresnel Lens on site. An article in the San Francisco Chronicle calls it "The most beautiful lighthouse on the Central Coast." Volunteers restored the station, putting in 65,000 hours in labor and $1.5 million to support the effort, which took over 15 years. Amazing. If you do take the trip, don't forget to tip your docent and trolly driver!

Notes, if you're taking elders, a walker is helpful. One lovely lady on our tour only had a cane, and didn't feel up to walking the distance from the trolly drop off to the lighthouse, which is a bit of a distance. Wheel chair access (or stroller access) is limited because there are stairs to climb. I would not recommend this for families with kids in strollers.

“lighthouse jubilee”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2014

got to go to the port san luis lighthouse for the "jubilee" on father's day sunday. A scenic trolley ride out, a gourmet picnic lunch, live music, and a self guided lighthouse tour. What a great time. Plenty of knowledgeable docents to ask questions of. The jubilee is held once a month, check local listings for times and dates.

“Lighthouse by way of Kayak”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 13, 2014

My sister and I rented kayak's from Avila Beach Paddlesports and made our way to the lighthouse. Beached the kayak's and went up the stairs to the lighthouse. Avila Beach Paddlesports made the reservations for the tour for us. It was so beautiful, scenic, & picturesque. Next time I want to do the hike in to the Lighthouse!

“Time capsule -- and what a view!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 26, 2014

You board a trolley that takes you up a mountain road and back in time, to this lovely lighthouse dating to 1890. Docents provide great information, from the changes on the site over the years to the woman whose memories of childhood at the lighthouse aided those working to restore it. From the site, you have great views of Avila Beach, the bay, and the ocean beyond. Well worth the time and money.
