Love this hotel and Avila Beach area. Fun, relaxing, Bob Jones Trail, close to other Central Coast beach towns & San Luis Obispo.

This was our (wife and I) first trip to a lighthouse. The docents were very knowledgeable and engaging, they answered all questions thoroughly, and gave an easy-to-understand, yet engaging history of the lighthouse and the surrounding areas, including the geology of the area, Native-American presence, original settlers, and early and current industry. In addition, the views from the lighthouse are incredible.

The Port San Luis Lighthouse is a beautiful, peaceful location near Avila Beach, CA. We went to the lighthouse on a private tour (public tours are offered) for our company party in the middle of December 2013.

A trolley brings you to the lighthouse via a one-lane mountain road on which you're treated to spectacular views of Avila Beach and Port San Luis. The Port San Luis Lighthouse is an old Victorian building with beautiful features. The tour allows you to see the Victorian Lighthouse which has been restored. There are a lot of stairs including the second floor of the house and the tower. There is also a narrow ladder to climb to the tower. The view from the tower is magnificent and worth the effort.

There is plenty of time to enjoy the location. The docent who led the tour was very knowledgeable. Our group of 18 included adults and children. Although we live along the central coast, it was the first time any of us had been there. Everyone enjoyed the outing. There were bathrooms available, a water fountain and a small gift shop.

Docent led hikes from Avila Beach are also offered.

This nicely restored lighthouse is a four mile round trip trek. It is available only by way of docent-let hikes, and only on a pre-reserved basis. I would rate trails as a bit rugged, but that is what mountain hikes are all about. The Elevation gain and loss along the trails is challenging, but you can take it at your own pace and the docents will accomodate your abilities. For emergencies, a Van is available. It is located about a half mile beyond the farthest visible bluff past Port San Luis. The docents do a great job of elaborating about the flora, fauna, climate and history along the way. I have always reserved by calling San Luis Bay Inn at 805 595-2333. Pack a lunch, take water and a camera. Be sure to wear decent hiking footware that broken in and has good traction. From some of the hotels in Pismo, the lighthouse beacon is visible from the dining decks at night.

We love their clams, mushrooms, assortment of beers, and their hot sour dough rolls. Every visit makes you want to come back again.
