“All Rental Rooms have View of Blank Wall!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 31, 2012

When we arrived at this Inn we discovered that our room's balcony opened onto a blank wall (see photo) - no view, not even of a parking lot! To make matters worse, there was a window from a corridor in it so people could look into our room! We complained, but we discovered that ALL of the rooms that they rent on a daily basis have the same view. It turns out that this is a time-share facility; when they renovated it they messed up the views of 6 of their rooms - these are the six and only six rooms that are available for nightly rentals.

To be honest, the rest of the facility is quite nice: incredible views (from the grounds), nice pool/hot tub, ping pong/pool table, though no restaurant. But the rooms felt like you were living in a cave, and i was extremely upset that they never mentioned the lack of views in their advertising.

The property is in great shape. We stayed in a studio (fully renovated) and then in a 1br (renovated except countertops). Both rooms were clean and functional. The grounds were beautiful - the pool is smallish and not as nice as the overall property. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. We were there in July and a lot of families were enjoying themselves.
The studio is sufficient as it has a full kitchen, dining table, sleeper sofa and computer desk and would do for a small family (no privacy). It appears every room has at least a decent view. The complex is shaped like a T - with the original 4 story building having 1br and mini-suite studios and either a ocean view or golf course (partial ocean) view. The wings face the ocean and are staggered up the hil with 2nd, 3rd, and 4th/5th floor buildings - and the views are spectacular. I spend the end of every day there.
Avila itself is isolated from 101 by 4-5 miles and is in a large cove area with calm waters. The resort overlooks Avila Beach and is just a short walk. We passed a local market on the way in from 101 to Avila and picked up fresh fruit and veggies. There is a local farmers market (party, really) every friday night at Avila Beach with local restaurants selling from booths at great prices.
This was our home base to travel up US 1 towards Carmel. This is a spectacular drive and we went to Hearst Castle one day (about 55 miles) then Carmel another (about 130 miles). Hearst now lets you explore the grounds, which are amazing.
The weather is cooler all year round as Cal is one of the few mediterrean climates in the world. We both explored and relaxed in Avila - it was a great trip.
Favorite restaurants - Custom House in Avila pricey but good - lunch was reasonable. Fat Cats (down on pier end) is more casual, open later, big portions, great food and very reasonable. Old Port Inn is out on the pier, expensive, but worth it - will let you split plates. Blue Sky cafe is in Morro (by water, overlooking the rock) has great breakfast and chicken tacos with mango salsa and happy hours. Ventana Grill (near Pismo) has unbelievable views, a great happy hour, moderate prices.
Best place to shop - go to the Los Osos valley rd? exit (about 5-10 past Avila Beach rd exit on 101) and go left and you will find everything you need. There is a Target, a natural foods warehouse (don't remember the name) with organic food choices (if you care), and a BevCo for refreshments - within a mile.

Room Tip: Newer wings have better AC but are a LONG walk.

Stayed here for one night as a stop off between SF and LA. We were not told beforehand that the hotel had no restaurant, cafe or even bar. The only source for food or drink were a couple of vending machines that sold coke and crisps etc. 10 minute walk to Avila Beach where there were a few restaurants.
I guess the hotel would have been nice enough if you knew that there were no amenities, but this is the first hotel I've ever stayed in that had absolutely nothing.
Recommend the "Custom House" in the town for meals, especially for breakfast.

Nice room with full kitchen, lg bathroom, king bed. The pool area was average, water heated and clean, hot tub holds 8 but often had more in the eves. No store or restaurant on site tho a short hike to the local beach which has plenty to offer including stores, restaurants, wine tasting, and a wonderful beach area and promenade

We stayed from Friday to Friday during the 4th of July week in a 1 bedroom unit. I thought the space for our family of 5 was pretty large. The Inn has a decent size pool and a small kiddy pool. There is one hot tub but my husband had put in a suggestion to have an adult only hot tub (they do have land space to probably do this). The hot tub they have is near the pool and can be over run by kids. There are 5-6 grills that are cleaned every day but the BTUs was too low for us.

For the 4th of July, we stayed at our hotel and watched the Pismo Fireworks. It was really tiny but at least the kids got to see them. We heard that Pismo was crazy crowded!

Things or places I would recommend while you are here:
1) Ride your bike on the Bob Jones trail
2) Avila Valley Farm
3) Visit Solvang and make sure you visit Sunny Fields Playground for the kids to burn off some energy before heading back
4) Take the trolly to Pismo Beach
5) Visit Morro Bay
6) Pete’s Pier Side Café
7) Custom House Restaurant
8) Doc Burnstein’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlour in Arroyo Grande

The Inn is just a short walk to the Avila Beach/Playground/Pier. My one complaint about the location of the inn is that the main street (Avila Beach Drive) is very busy. If you are walking, you have to cross Avila Beach Drive to get to the beach. There is no cross walk and initially when crossing there is no side walk until you get to the bridge. During the one week we were there, we witness 3 separate accidents on the main street. One accident involved a 4 year old boy who ran into the street and was struck by a car.

I travel here once a year and have been since I was 7 years old. My family had a timeshare here, however I continue to go back each year without them. It is by far the best hotel I have ever stayed at. There is a game room, laundry services, you can walk to the beach, and buy fresh sea food, then come back and grill it yourself. The rooms are VERY spacious. We always get a 2 bedroom suite with a pull out couch in the living room, which sleeps 8 of us comfortably!!

Waking up every morning to the sounds of the ocean waves rolling on the sandy beach makes me appreciate every moment at this beautiful cove of a place. San Luis Bay Inn itself is a little dated but I hear they are upgrading units as I type this review. The staff is always welcoming. Housekeeping staff was very quick to get me more blankets at 9pm at night. One of the best concierge service around. AJ Spurs is a must for dinner (come hungry and still take doggy bag home). A must do activity booked thru the concierge is the Seaweed Express!

The elevator is a bit slow so I enjoyed the stairs. No restaurant on site however grocery stores 10-12 minutes away in SLO or Arroyo Grande. Avila Valley Barn is a must for fruits & veggies.

The pool is incredibly clean and always clean towels nearby. The weight-exercise room has glass doors that open right onto the pool, so view is nice. TV's inside are nice too if you'd rather watch TV. Fun arcade room for the older kids.

Laundry machines are available. Interesting...I was on the 2nd floor, so I used the pool level laundry room and cost $1.00 for a wash and $1.00 for a dry. Soap/softener for .50. I happen to get off on the 3rd floor by accident and walked by the 3rd floor laundry room and the price was $1.50 for a wash and dry. Plus the washing machines are smaller. So, use the pool level to save ya money if you want.

I am extremely jealous if you get a room here. It's worth the views alone!

Room Tip: All rooms have somewhat of a view of the ocean. Beautiful place!
