“Fun fun fun”
Reviewed October 2, 2009

We bought tickets to a glass bottom boat ride for $17.50 each. It was worth every penny! We had so much fun. We went to Catalina on Sept. 30th so it was still nice weather there and was not crowded at all. There was only one other couple on the boat, so we got to walk around freely and spend a lot of time up on deck with the captain feeding the fish. The captain was soooo nice and very entertaining. He knew a lot about the fish and habitat, too which was cool. He also offered to take some pictures of us that turned out really good. There were tons of fish everywhere to look at. I would recommend buying fish food on the boat (two bags for $5) because it is fun to feed them. If you don't want to spend that much, at least buy a handful for 25 cents at the dispensers on the pier before you go so you can at least feed them a little. The Nautilus semi-submersible looks cool, but I heard that people get seasick feeling in there more often because it is an enclosed space without fresh air. The glass bottom boat has plenty of fresh air and is way cheaper.

“Skip the City Passport tour”
Reviewed July 22, 2008

We booked this tour in a combo package with the Nautilus tour.

The Nautilus is a semi submersible. Once out in the water you travel through beautiful sea weed and several types of fish. The boat is armed with "fish food torpedos" and fish food can be "purchased" to arm your gun. It's pricey for the fish food, but it's neat to watch the fish swarm around your port hole and the kids get a kick out of it. It was a nice tour in that the "tour guide" was funny and eager to see us enjoy the trip. She made sure to point out the colorful fish, and sent several free torpedos of food out so that even if you didn't "purchase" food, you were able to experience the fish "frenzy" at your porthole. She was eager to take pictures with our camera and was overall very accomodating.

The City Passport tour, however, was the opposite. Our bus and it's driver were about 80 years old (the island has quite a retired population on it). Not to discriminate (as my dad is a lively 75yrs old) but our driver was the opporite of the enthusiastic gal on the Nautilus and mumbled so at times was difficult to understand. The bus transmission was catchy, the streets are narrow and bumpy, which was intensified by the bus. Although the island is beautiful and the bus takes you to some of the beautiful spots, you can't get out and are left trying to take pictures out of the open top window of the bus (over your head). In hind sight, we saw many people on the same roads we took on golf carts (at $40 an hour) and could stop whenever they wanted, we would have done that instead.
The City passport tour, was mosly a disappointment.

“Go inland for great views!”
Reviewed July 23, 2007

Take the van ride to the interior of this great island.

Witness the extent of the fire damage done in May 2007.

The views are breath-taking and there really is an airport in the sky!

“BEWARE! Even if you do have a confirmed reservation.”
Reviewed January 29, 2007

My husband and I were on a cruise and one of our day trips was in Avalon on Catalina Island. We reviewed and searched for fun things to do. We decided to book a submarine tour with Catalina Adventure Tours and if we booked that tour they would give us a deal on a land tour. About a month prior to our cruise we booked, paid and got a confirmation number. When they day came for us to take our tours we approached the desk agent and said Hello we are here for our submarine tour. The agent laughed and said, "Well, no your not going today." I pulled our paperwork out and showed her the confirmation number and reciept for payment. She said we do not have a guide for that tour it has been cancelled. We were a little bummed but said okay we would like a refund on our credit card. She said, no the tickets are good indefinetly you can use them another time. We said no, we do not know when we will be back we want a refund. She finally said she could not do a refund I need to speak with a supervisor- who was not in. So, I took down the information and called. I actually ended up calling five times. Each time telling the story and being told the tickets are good forever. I have been now told I will see a credit on my credit card, still have not seen it. I highly discourage people from using this company for having to go through the misery we have in dealing with them when THEY cancelled the tour. It is ridiculous. We ended up renting a golf cart and doing a touring the island ourself. That was fun the island was beautiful.
