“Surprisingly nice and very accommodating”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 27, 2011

Very few hotels on the Island will allow single night stays on the weekend in summer and, those that will, are generally low end. However, Casa Mariquita was not only willing to book a single night stay, but we found the rooms to be very clean and nicely appointed with cable TV, plush bedding and beautiful hardwood floors. The staff was very accommodating and allowed us to store our luggage before check-in and after check out to coincide with boat schedules. It is perfectly located less than a block from the water (with views), but still just far enough away from the center of town to avoid the loud nightlife interfering with many hotels right along the strip. We were actually expecting less, but we were very pleased to get a lot more.

First time family trip to Catalina. We needed to make choice based only on internet information. This hotel turned out to be a great choice. Location is 1 long block from the beach - and the noise.

Our room was very clean. Wood floors and furniture looked new. (I think this has resolved some of the negative issues from older reviews.) There are several patio areas to relax and enjoy the Avalon and ocean views. We were able to book all of our Catalina tours and such right at the hotel (Highly recommend the Zip Line and the Cape Canyon tour). The room was fairly priced and was a good value. There was a continental breakfast that helped to get the day started (We enjoyed our coffee, juice and hot muffins on the patio each morning.)

The thing that made this hotel great was the staff. Christine and Lauren at the desk were very accommodating and friendly. The housekeeping staff always said hello. Everyone had a smile. We all felt very welcome.

Just a heads-up, the hotel has no elevator so you'll need to carry your bags up to your room. Wasn't a big deal for us, but if you have any physical limitations might want to make note.

Overall a great place to stay on Catalina and I know we will be back soon!

Room Tip: Patios were great on the third floor

Christine and Lauren (staff) went above and beyond their duties to see that our stay there was a pleasurable one. Their hospitality was an A plus!!! The rooms were very clean, the decor had a European feel : ) Location is walking distance to all the shops and restaurants. Christine hiked the "stairs" with us ( Lucy and Lisa) as well as serving as our personal tour guide. I would definately stay there again.

Casa Mariquita has a great package deal with Catalina Express - they are one of the few hotels that offer a weekend package in addition to week day packages!

We called ahead to make sure the hotel had storage for our bikes, as we were bringing them over on the ferry. (I highly recommend bringing a bike, if you're considering it, and the hotel does have a storage room!) Upon arrival, we found the hotel to be just set back a little way off the main drag on Metropole. Save yourself the taxi money and walk!

When we arrived at Casa Mariquita, I was greeted by name by Christine - I was so surprised! She gave us great directions on how to get to the Wrigley botanical gardens and was very friendly throughout our entire stay. Our room was nice - nothing extravagant, but exactly what we expected for the price we paid. It did have air conditioning, a mini fridge, and a TV, unlike many other places in Catalina. You can walk through the hotel hallways and relax at the outside lounge area, or walk to the third floor and look out at the ocean in the distance. The noise level was quiet throughout the hotel, all rooms are non-smoking, and there is a Vons conveniently located just a few yards away to stock up on water, snacks, and sundries.

The only very few "cons": The continental breakfast is essentially muffins and coffee - definitely not enough to constitute a meal. Our room had no view whatsoever, save for our enclosed hallway, but to be fair, we didn't expect much given the great price we got with the package deal. Our sink started leaking the last morning as we were getting ready to leave, flooding its wooden cabinet and spilling onto the floor.

We were seen off with hugs from Christine and left with smiles on our faces. We will definitely stay at Casa Mariquita again on our next trip!

Room Tip: Only top floor rooms have an ocean view!

I have mixed feelings about this hotel. The service in this hotel was fantastic. However, the room was very small. To be fair, I would think most of the rooms on Catalina are small. Ours was on the first floor next to the road and very noisy. The bed was pretty lumpy, but the room was clean. Also, the continental breakfast was more of a snack. Small muffins and instant oatmeal. Beautiful views from the top. I would recommend they use our room as a breakfast room and increase the offering.

My spouse and I stayed for one night, and we were very pleased. Christine at the front desk was very friendly, helping us store our luggage until check-in time, and offering hiking and other tips for activities in Avalon. The hotel had a outdoorsy, Spanish feel, which fit well for Catalina's outdoor activities. The bed was very comfortable.

A couple shortcomings: (1) the breakfast is limited pretty much to muffins and oatmeal, so it may not suffice for all guests (still a good value though); and (2) the bathroom is very tight and has the appearance out of a cheap motel. The hotel seemed to invest more in the bedset and the sink/vanity, which were beautiful. Overall, quiet location and great value.

We really liked our stay at Casa Mariquita. It was an easy walk (about 7 minutes) down to the main street of Avalon. It was nice to walk to our hotel, especially after a big meal and being up the hill a little gave us some very nice views of the water. Enjoyed seeing a cruise ship from our windows one morning. Our rooms were immaculate and beautifully furnished. Our one-bedroom suite included a good sized family room (large couch and chair with ottomen) complete with huge flat screen TV/DVD player and instant fireplace! Fireplace wasn't real but did generate some heat and was a very nice touch. We even had a small private deck! Very comfortable room. Our children shared a room with two beds, but joined us to watch movies in our suite. The staff was extremely friendly. We enjoyed a complementary continental breakfast (just juice, coffee, muffins, and oatmeal), but most days we wanted to enjoy one of the adorable restaurants in the town for our breakfast. I don't think the hotel has an elevator, but I personally enjoyed walking up the few flights of stairs to our room. Hotel had several pretty outside sitting areas (little decks with patio furniture) where you could sit and enjoy the sun! We would definitely stay here again.
