“Budget-Friendly with Historic Charm”

The other reviews here have been pretty accurate. Having been to the island numerous times, we were already aware that the island is older & accommodations tend to be smaller in-scale than on the mainland, and that island plumbing is low-flow, so none of those things were surprising to us at all. What makes the Hermosa a gem is that it's one of the least expensive hotels on the island AND it's in a terrible location in the middle of Avalon with easy access to shopping, dining, beaches and activities.

We recently went to the island with relatives for a bit of a family reunion with two families staying in the main hotel, while my party was in one of the cabins. The main building has lots of character & old world charm with a spacious lobby, computer w/ internet access for guest use, a meeting room and a huge storage area for guests to store diving equipment or luggage if they are roaming the island before / after check-in/out. The rooms, while small, had everything we needed. When booking our trip, we weren't looking for bells & whistles - we wanted a clean, comfortable affordable place to stay whilst we explored the island and we we got exactly that.

Our cabin included a small kitchen which we used often, being just a few doors down from the Krogers market (very convenient!) We stocked up on beautiful California produce, healthy hearty snacks and, yes, libations, which fit nicely in the small refrigerator / freezer and cupboards of our mini kitchen (which included table, chairs, toaster, microwave & dishes / utelsils for both cooking & eating.

There was originally a mix-up on the charge to my account upon check-in, but the manager remedied it immediately & still allowed us to keep the upgraded cabin we'd been assigned (although we'd only requested a standard, which would not have included the kitchen). We very much appreciated the prompt attention and the gracious upgrade! That's the kind of service I will definitely come back for!

Going mid-week, during the high season only cost us $100 / night... do your research - you won't find this anywhere else! We had a wonderful time exploring the island with various members of our party snorkeling, scub diving, boating around the island or doing an interior jeep tour, not to mention enjoying excellent seafood at the local restaurants and picking up unique keepsakes at the shops. We'll definitely be coming back soon! :)

Room Tip: All the rooms are on the small side, but clean & cozy. Just decide if you need a kitchen or not...

The Hermosa Hotel was perfect for my party of 5. I think the hotel is honestly represented on their website and fairly priced. It is an older property, but that gives it character. The staff was very friendly and enthusiastic to help. We stayed in the family style room #5. My only advice would be to be careful when walking across the floor rug. Two of us slipped more than once when walking across it and could have had a bad fall. Both nights we were woke up around 7am by a trash truck and someone in the neighboorhood who played very loud music to start their day. I don't consider this the hotel's fault though. Trash has to be taken away and I don't think the music lover was a guest.

We stayed in the Cottages and to our dismay, the room was so small and junky. This place is old and in need of a lot of work inside and out. The walls are so thin we could hear people talking as they walked up and down the stairs all evening.

Room Tip: Be aware its an historic building.

When you want to go to Santa Catalina Island ("Catalina") consider the Cottages at the Hermosa Hotel. They are 90 years old and in very, very nice shape. Management is constantly pouring tons of money into these little gems resulting in transferring "rustic" into clean (very), air conditioned, state of the art TV, fun and livable mini apartments (bedroom, kitchen, bath and privacy). Centrally located and super convenient.

Hospital clean and freshly painted are two nice things, but the charm comes from the employees... very friendly, responsive, everything from committed hearts, nothing rote! The 20 year old girl at the front desk would not let me touch our luggage (one of them the size of a bull elephant). She took the luggage from me and handled it as if she was a cruise ship baggage guy!

Save a lot of money in a place that is traditionally expensive. Visit the Hermosa Hotel. You will be even happier that you are a Trip Advisor fan!

Room Tip: Any of the Cottages if you want a different experience. Ask for Cottage "C". Otherwise th...

We booked a package over the phone after reading and researching online. The staff members were friendly from the very beginning all the way through to our final goodbyes. We stayed Sunday through Tuesday in one of the landing cottages, which are definitely small. If you are unable or unwilling to walk up a lot of stairs, this isn't the best choice. We didn't mind the stairs, though. The tiny room was clean with two queen beds, large flat-screen TV (wall-mounted), mini fridge, small microwave, and coffee maker. The bathroom had a slightly larger than average shower stall, toilet, and pedestal sink. No room for anything else. The chairs you normally get in a room are outside here (folding chairs). The hotel lobby has nice chairs and we hung out there for short periods of time.

Our package included several activities (Segway Tour, Wrigley Botanical Garden, 10-minute massages, Ghost Tour, and the museum), boat passage (round trip to/from Newport Beach), and the landing cottage for two nights. The best part is the hotel staff booked everything for us. They asked our preferences on the phone and called back with a few minor changes/questions. It was easy and hassle-free! When we arrived in Newport Beach to catch the boat, they only needed my name and I was handed our boat tickets. We had an easy boat ride there and back. LOVED IT! We walked from the boat to the Hermosa Hotel, which was a lovely 10-minute stroll through the picturesque town of Avalon. Upon arrival, we dropped our luggage in the baggage room (no charge) and picked up our packet of tickets for our activities. Krista has been there two weeks and was incredibly friendly and helpful!

We started with a Segway Tour with Skip, which was a short walk from the hotel. Skip was awesome! Highly recommend the Segway Tours! After our tour, we ate lunch then walked back to the Hermosa. Our room was ready an hour early. :)

The location of the Hermosa Hotel is a huge asset. We positively loved being able to walk anywhere in Avalon and not have to lug anything around. The hotel was so close to everything. Vons is two doors down (closer to the water), so one can pick up food and drinks for the fridge. There are plenty of good restaurants in Avalon, too, so you don't HAVE to stock the fridge.

We felt this was a good choice for a first visit to Avalon. We probably would have skipped the tours and such if not for the package (and the package made for a more interesting and fun vacation). The hotel is no-frills and the package made it an attractive option for our budget-conscious family. We would have paid quite a bit more if we had booked everything separately and it would have taken a lot more time.

Room Tip: All the rooms are SMALL, so book the least number of beds you need and don't plan to hang out in...

My husband and daughter and I shared a room. We weren't expecting anything fancy in a historic building but we found ourselves in one of the cottages next door. The sink was in the room with the two full size beds and there was little room to put anything. the bathroom had a toilet and a shower that was just enough for one person who isn't overweight. We were given four bath towels--no hand towels or wash clothes. when we went to ask for some more that evening we found the desk was closed for the night. I found a part of a candy wrapper in my bed. It was, on the otherhand, very convenient in terms of location. I have no idea what the regular rooms are like--hopefully better than the cottages.

Room Tip: I guess you should ask for a room in the hotel proper.

I really wished I could have enjoyed my stay at the hotel. As previous reviewers stated, the front desk staff is very nice and accommodating, however, a friendly staff can only go so far. We had two cottages, one with a kitchen and one without. The term cottage here, is very loose. The bed takes up most of the room. Ours came with a folding chair, however, my parents didn't. This is without a doubt the smallest room and bathroom I have every stayed in.

We had to step over the toilet to get to the sink and shower. The sink was almost in front of the toilet and their was no room to walk between. We actually used the kitchen sink to brush our teeth and wash our face. It was just too uncomfortable to try to wiggle into the bathroom.

Very old and dark bedspreads. I was concerned with the cleanliness of the spread particularly after touching the kitchen curtains by accident. They were almost stiff with dirt and grime.

There were large trash cans on the first and second level of the cottages. They were full when we arrived our first day, and two days later there was more trash piled on top and around them. No one emptied them in the two nights, three days we were there. On our second day, housekeeping staff left someone's dirty linen on the chair in front of our room.

We actually never got housekeeping, as they came by at 4:15pm. We had just arrived back to our room after being gone all day and didn't want to leave again, so told them never mind coming in. (On a side note, I was very surprised to see a pre-printed envelope on the dresser from housekeeping for their tip!)

This hotel needs a lot of TLC. Threadbare towels, window and shower curtains that need to be cleaned/replaced, fix or replace the blinds, get rid of dirty bedspreads. I know this hotel has a big following, but I definitely would not stay here again.
