“Just like the old days”
Reviewed August 16, 2011

The hotel location and helpfulness of the staff are unbeaten and the price is extremely competitive for Avalon. This hotel is exactly as advertised, an older, historic hotel with old fashioned amenities. That means small rooms and shared baths (or baths down the hallway). It was an experience for my teen age girls and their modern perspective. It is clean, but not recently remodeled. The baths and storage room in the hallway do add something not found in modern hotels, ie the ability to check in early and out late, go to the beach and still have a shower available. We are very happy to have stayed at the Hermosa hotel.

A cheap place, but you get what you pay for. Room was clean, but very run down.

Came in June for the Catalina's Flying Fish Festival and stayed in one of the cottages @ Hermosa Hotel for one night. It had 2 double beds, a bathroom, and a kitchen. The hotel wasn't too far in and you had access to a market just 2 buildings over.

The room was outdated and small. It's like as if you're driving on a one way street, only one person can be coming or going. One person literally has to back up, or jump onto one of the beds, for the other person to pass. For both beds, one side of it was pushed against the wall, which left a single narrow pathway. There was a tiny TV with bad picture quality mounted on the wall. Definitely pack light since there is very minimal space for luggage storage in the bedroom. There is no AC. There is a ceiling fan, which basically pushes the hot air around in the room. Be prepared to keep the door and window open for some cool air.

The bathroom is very small as well. You can fit a max of one person. Basically, you walk in and pivot and that's about as far as you'll get. The shower is a standing shower. The water pressure was pretty low. At 5"3', even I felt the shower was a bit too cramped. Not to mention the bathroom door opens outwards, which blocks the entrance to the kitchen.

The size of the kitchen was pretty decent. It had a table w/chairs, counter top with a sink, and stove. A microwave was also provided. Be warned if you choose to cook: there are very limited pots/pans and utensils. Luckily the grocery store was just down the street. (We had to pick up plates, utensils, cooking oil, knife, cups etc.)

All in all, I would not recommend booking one of the cottages. Yes for the most part you wont be in your room most of the time. But when you do return to your room after a long day of outdoor activities on Catalina, you deserve to come back to a room that is spacious and cool. So spend a few dollars more and look for another hotel =)

Booking a room: Be sure to NOT get the rooms located on the first floor of the hotel. The luggage room is right next to 2 of the guest rooms. Not to mention that is where the ice machine and restroom is located.

We just spent three days at the Hermosa with family and friends. Each of us felt that we had overpaid for these accommodations. The rooms are not clean- bedspreads old and not clean, carpet dirty, under the bed were dust bunnies that must have been there for years. The bathroom was not cleaned on any of the days and the last day and night the island had a saltwater pipe break so the toilets had no water. Had to use a force flush with fresh sink water. Housekeeping needs to do a better job! Beds are old and uncomfortable. No one is on duty after 8 pm even tho' there are quite a few rooms to this complex. The staff at the desk are friendly enough, but there is no phone in the room to call them. Stay somewhere else until they renovate the place!

This place is amazingly dirty and gross. When we checked in the room wasn't even clean so we had to call the maid. The room is very tiny. We supposed to stayed there for two nights but we checked out the next day. They might have bed bugs because i was getting all these little bug bites at night. Comforter is very dirty like they didn't wash it for years...Very loud !!! you can't even sleep at night. The one thing i really don't like about this place is they charge you way too high price for this tiny little gross rooms...200$ a night. Just go somewhere else but not this place ...

Room Tip: Please don't stay at this place unless you wan't get bed bug bites....

Had a room on the 1st floor with a queen size bed. The bed was pushed up against the wall to make room to enter the room. The person sleeping against the wall had to climb over the other person to get into the bed our out to use the bathroom. On the 2nd day of our stay the room was NOT made up or fresh towels to replace the soiled towels. After a "talk" with the front desk, the room was finally made up at 4PM. The room did not have a telephone to call the front desk. The baggage storage is a joke, it's an unsecure room at the end of the hallway with an open door until 8PM--so just come in and pick out
a piece of luggage and be on your way. One thing that was very annoying was an ice
machine outside our door, so all hours of the night someone was filling an ice
chest for a party--since it awakened us, we were not even invited to the party. When they advertise that the hotel was established in 1896 belive it--in 115 years I would think they could have made some improvements.

Room Tip: Try another hotel

This was our first trip to Catalina. We purchased a promotional "package" from Groupon and thought that it was a good deal. It seemed like we were getting a lot of Bang for our Buck. The staff was very nice. So nice, that we actually feel kind of bad giving the Hotel a negative review, but we wanted to let future potential guests know what they're in for. First, this place is OLD! They don't call it the "Historic Hermosa" for nothing. Second, we stayed in one of the bungalows. It was very small. We could tell they tried to keep it clean, but there was something just not right. For example: We could see daylight coming through around the edges of the front door. Third, the noise factor was a big problem. We heard lots of street noise, but worst of all was the constant yelling (in SPANISH) from all sides. The yelling went on all night. Forth, the bungalows are so close together, you can smell the gross food your "neighbors" from south of the border are cooking. The stench was horrible. Needless to say, if we ever go back to Catalina... we'll be looking for something a little nicer. We are not picky [high-maintainence] people, but we do have our limits and the Hermosa was just a little too much for us to bear.

Room Tip: Get away from the street. Lots of noise.
