We stayed here for the weekend of November 3rd for two nights for our anniversary. I chose this location because of the nice pictures on the website. We booked a package that included round trip transportation from Long Beach on the Catalina Express, 2 tours, plus the 2 nights in the room for about $395 USD. We reserved about a month before by calling. Check-in went ok except for they forgot to give me my tour info at first. I didn’t expect much, didn’t get much. This was our first visit to Catalina. I wish I had others to compare it to.
The appearance of the place is charming, just like the pictures. It is sort of at the top of a hill, or should I say steep drive way, so be prepared to hike a moderate incline when returning to your room. It was no problem for us. The hotel rooms are somehow crammed all together in one small area. (As is the rest of Avalon)
The room was really old and small, but not terribly small. We stayed on the La Paloma side, which is said to be “historic”, in cottage #5. One thing I couldn’t get over was stepping out of the shower on to the kitchen floor. The shower is in the kitchen! I spent about 20 minutes trying to get the water the right temperature. It was either too cold or steaming hot.
I liked the amenities we had for the price. There was a microwave, stove, sink, dishes, glassware, pots, pans, towels, and utensils in the kitchen. A negative was a very worn looking sponge we were supposed to use to wash our dishes. Yuck.
I survived 2 nights on the firm bed which wasn’t horrible, but I am not that picky. The room also had a day bed. The TV was quite small. There was an old dresser with a mirror.
There was not an AC or heater in this room. They inform you prior. There was a portable heater I found in the closet. The weather was great so we didn’t need to use it. You have to ask for an iron. I took my own hair dryer, but I’ll bet they give you one if you ask.
The bathroom was tiny- separate from the shower.
The walls are thin, when people talking or walking by it was pretty noisy. We kept our TV on while sleeping in the morning to drown out the noise.
The walk to town only takes about 5 minutes if that. I easily walked up and down the streets of Avalon shopping and back to the room several times in one day. Never rented a golf cart, didn’t need one, but they looked fun.
This place is ok if you just want a fair priced, kitchen-equipped, convenient location to stay at while in Catalina.
