The Hotel Atwater is an older hotel that has been well maintained. The Hotel sits a block off the main drag (Crescent Avenue) and is attached to the very good Mr. Ning's Chinese Restaurant. We stayed for 3 nights and found our room a little crowded but very nicely decorated and with very comfortable beds and pillows. Some rooms do not come with AC so best to pay the little extra as the noise on the surrounding streets can be a little much if you have to leave the windows open. The rooms come with a ceiling fan, hair dryer, Iron/ironing board, TV, and a clock radio. The room did not come with a telephone, or with a coffee maker although Coffee and a variety of TAZO teas are available in the lobby until late morning.
Also, if you have mobility issues and have a hard time with stairs, this is not the place for you as the rooms are all on the 2nd and third floors and the stairs to the floors are very steep. We had about 3 hours between checkout and ferry back to Dana Point, they happily held our luggage until we finished lunch and a golf cart (self) tour). The Ferry Boat landing is about a 10 minute walk from the hotel so save your cab fare and hoof it.
Overall a very nice hotel with a very friendly and helpful staff.More
