“Beautiful Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 14, 2005

My husband and I just returned from Catalina this past weekend 6/10/05-6/13/05. What I wanted to mention, was that the Hotel Villa Portofino was our choice of hotel when we made our first trip to Catalina back in the fall of 1999. We still feel that we made the best choice, even back then. We travel frequently, both internationally and within the US. We decided to walk through the property and found it to be as lovely now as it was then. We would recommend this property if you want a hotel style stay. We would recommend Hamilton Cove if you want a condo (where we stayed this past weekend). Let me add, that the Ristorante Villa Portofino is excellent and is one of our favorite stops. Enjoy!

I just came back from visiting the catalina Islands. My lady and I stayed at the Hotel Villa portofino. Yes the rooms are small. But they are clean and romantic. This hotel will make you feel like you have your very own place to stay on the island. They actually give you keys to your room and the rooms have outside and patio access no walking thru a lobby beautiful. If you go to catalina stay at the villa portofino.

This was our first trip to Avalon, and we chose Villa Portofino over several other options based mainly on price. We were only staying for a night, so we figured we could put up with anything. The hotel is located on the far side from the ferry landing, but it's only a 10 minute walk. The location is awesome because it's not in the middle of everything, but your still on the main strip. The view from the Sun Deck was fabulous. Our room was small and we weren't crazy about the sliding glass door as the room door since there was only one other small window, so unless you wanted to let anyone who was walking by look in, you needed to have the blind closed that made the room dark. The shower was also somewhat small and as I am 6' 2", the shower head was quite short. That being said, we were very happy overall ,and if you are looking for a basic room just to sleep in and plan on spending most of your time out and about, this is a great place. My wife appreciated the cleanliness and the friendly staff.

The first good rainstom had hit Southern California at the end of October. Visiting Catalina on a weekday during the off season enabled me to get the harbor view suite at Hotel Villa Portofino at a very reasonable price. We arrived by ferry from Newport Harbor about 1030 AM on October 28th. Though the hotel is at the opposite end of the harbor from the ferry terminal, it was a very easy walk, even for us seniors. The front desk staff was friendly and we stored our baggage and walked the town. The "suite" consided of a bedroom area & a living room with fireplace, which provided nice warmth. Though it could not be compared with a hotel suite, I think they did a nice job on what appears to be a remodel & combination of a couple of regular size hotel rooms.

The one drawback; it is on the golf cart route. The hotel sits on a corner intersection which leads to the casino and the upper level area of the island. It is also on the route of the rental golf carts (which you must use if you want to drive about the area). It was plenty busy from the early AM until the evening. However, it was a good view room to people watch from.

The suite was a good first time experience for us at this hotel. We would stay here again, but probably in one of the smaller inside rooms, which are more than adequate. A real plus is the easy walk to the casino and dining.

As a first timer, be sure to reserve a room at least 2 mths before Labor Day Weekend. I ended up with a tiny room in the courtyard without a window. Talk about a cave. This is for a $200+ a night. Thank goodness for the refrigerator and air conditioning. Enjoy the sundeck too.

Another tip is don't rent a kayak for more than an hour. As newbies in choppy waters we were not allowed on beaches to rest. Geez, Descanso made sure we were not welcome. Also scuba divers don't like it if you kayak in their area.

We felt that Catalina was beautiful but there are no deals here. Also, bring a big hat. The sun is just as intense as S. Calif. The Chinese Restaurant and Pancake Cottage were the only decent places to eat. Busybee and Armstrongs looked overpriced. We enjoyed ice cream at Olaf's next to Antonino's. The Discovery Tour's were awesome. We enjoyed the Undersea tour and the Skyline tour. Be sure to do the Minature Golf. That was the best part of our trip. Do this Catalina trip at least once but take my advice above.

The best thing about the Villa Portofino is its location. It is located on the main drag but just far enough from the more noisy area of town. Our room was small but not too cramped. The decor looks a little worn. The stall shower had a very low faucet so anyone of medium-tall height would have to bend over to get your hair wet.
The sun deck is nice and provides a lovely view of the ocean.
The continental breakfast is pretty skimpy and we opted to go out for breakfast.
The staff members we encountered were pleasant but I did not find them extremely friendly or eager to help.
Overall, I'd say it is a decent place to stay but I might try somewhere else if I return to Catalina.
