“Unit 1256 - Very Nice”
Reviewed July 1, 2014

We stayed 4 nights/5 days at Hamilton Cove in late June. The property itself is very nice and very well maintained. Every day the maintenance people were out painting, cutting the lawn, raking, etc….very clean place. Onsite there is a pool, beach access, tennis courts, workout room and put-put golf course. Security guards were very perceptive, which made us feel safe while we were there. The beach area is very small and quite rocky. Water was clear, but if you're looking for typical beach with sand, it's best to migrate outside the resort.

Our unit was 1256. It’s a four bedroom (3 queens/1 king) with 3 balconies…all with ocean views. (views were perfect) It’s above the pool and beach area, so you walk or cart down to get there…..close, not very long. The unit itself was very clean and had access to everything you need – full kitchen/washer and dryers, etc. These places were built in the late 70’s/early 80’s, so the insides are a bit dated, but that didn’t bother us. (Our unit had new carpet) Only issue we had was one of the showers clogging. We also had two other groups stay in the one and two bedroom condos, and both enjoyed their stay.

The location is about half a mile from town. It’s a bit too far to walk, so you have to take the golf carts down when you need food/entertainment. There aren’t any onsite food and beverage joints, so you need to stock up at the grocery store, or plan to eat all of your meals in-town. (soda machines by pool but that’s it)

Overall, a very pleasant stay and look forward to returning.

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!! Of course Catalina, but 2-27 was AMAZING!!! (I've stayed in Hamilton Cove many times before and let's just say, some units REALLY need to updated !!! and some should even be fumigated) >>>THIS PLACE has been beautifully remodeled....the kitchen & bathrooms were like something in a magazine! I think the private bedroom downstairs w/ the balcony was my favorite part! I absolutely loved it! I could have stayed in the community the whole time and been happy ! This unit is right by the pool, spa, private beach, and the GYM!! PLUS, if you want to leave and go into town...there's a GOLF CART !!! << so much fun! Also, one of the best golf carts I saw on the island! OVERALL? GREAT TRIP (and i'm not one to write reviews) 2-27 will be the ONLY unit I book from now on!

Room Tip: 2-27 is the BEST!!!!

After spending last week in Hamilton Cove, I can see why there are so many mixed reviews on this site. Your experience will depend entirely on your unit. Building number 18 is brand new and gorgeous from top to bottom. If you do your research, look at the photos, and pay a reasonable price, you will not be disappointed. Our three-bedroom unit had every amenity you could think of, was spotless, and no small detail was overlooked. The family that owns it obviously takes great pride to make sure their guests have what they need and feel welcome. Our family of six couldn't have been happier. The bunk bed room was perfect and all three bathroom were huge. It was the top unit in the building, with breath taking views and ten or so steps to our golf cart. Hamilton Cove is clearly geared to families or romantic couple so if you're looking for the party scene, it's probably not the place for you. We couldn't find one single thing to complain about and never called the management company once. We made use of all the activities the Cove had to offer, tennis, basketball, mini-golf, croquet, etc. I will definitely go back and will always request this particular unit. The wrap around balcony was an added bonus. Simply fantastic family vacation!!

Room Tip: Do your research. Be aware of the stairs and ask how many if it's an issue for you. Be aware t...

Delayed review, but better late than never. We stayed at Hamilton Cove September 2013. The trip was perfect. Our stay was right when all the big crowds have left for the summer. The unit was beyond beautiful. Newly renovated and beautifully decorated. Traveling with 5 adults and a 1 1/2 year old. Once we set up some chairs to keep him from wondering off from the balcony, we were set. Not too many steps to the front door, 30 something steps. Only "cons" would be the BBQ grill looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a while. They had rubber gloves thankfully and we just scrubbed it ourselves. Overall, the unit was amazing, the beds very comfortable, the golf cart was so much fun riding to town, and the booking company was always very nice. Thanks for a great trip.

Room Tip: Ask for a fan if one isn't in the condo!

I had heard this was the place to stay, but after spending a long weekend on Catalina, I have to say that Hamilton Cove is the LAST place you want to stay. We were two families in 2-33, which was a trip back into the late 70s/early 80s. Decor was very dingy and outdated. I've actually never seen a micro wave that old, btw. The kitchen was poorly stocked, which is one of the main reasons you'd pick a condo over a hotel -- no beach towels and the basic things you need to make coffee. Who wants to pack beach towels in their luggage? Not me. You have to do a FULL ON grocery shop and I found that necessity very disappointing. I've stayed in many rental condos and I've never had to buy basic things like sugar.

But back to the condo itself -- the gear for tennis and games was old or broken, but the kids could never get on the court anyway. Too many units, not enough courts. The hot tub was rarely warm. The beach was tiny. The whole stretch of the condo units shared ONE balcony. No separation, so literally someone could walk by your bedroom window at any time. There were many flights of stairs, so getting into and out of this place with luggage was a huge bummer. There were signs everywhere about what you CAN'T do. The entire complex is really kind of an uptight place for seniors who can still hike the millions of staircases. It's also very far removed, which would be great if the complex was somewhere you actually wanted to hang out.

We enjoyed the golf cart, but that hadn't been well maintained either. The headlights needed repair and the gas gauge was broken, so we raced over to fill up the tank and it was already full.

I don't really blame the rental company. They were very professional and easy to deal with. They dealt with a couple of our complaints promptly. But they should encourage the owners to change the price of this unit. It's just not worth it. And the folks who have the cleaning contract for Hamilton Cove should be set adrift on a raft. But end of the day, the owners are really at fault for not putting a few bucks into 2-33 to improve it. Or drop the price so people don't expect more. But nobody can ever change the vibe of the complex. It did not feel warm or welcoming.

Stay at one of the cute hotels that are beachfront. Hotel Metropole, Vista Del Mar, Portofino, etc. That's what I'm going to do next time for sure. I bet they have coffee in the rooms and beach towels in the bathroom.

Room Tip: If you stay here, request a unit that has a private balcony. Make sure you study the photos to make...

Dear Guest,

We were concerned after reading your comments, so we paid a visit to Villa 233 at Hamilton cove. I have to admit that the microwave is an older model, but works fine. You did fail to mention that these owners have recently purchased a new dining set, the L-shaped sofa/sofa sleeper is fairly new, the extra living room chair is new, and the 2nd bedroom king bed is new. The owners and housekeepers work hard at keeping our properties clean and well stocked. We checked the supplies in the kitchen and found this area to be well stocked with cookware, utensils, and the basic condiments in the fridge. We do not keep sugar and other food items in our villas, as these would tend to attract ants, and most visitors would not care to use left over sugar, flour, etc. Regarding the number of steps to the property, our website does state the number of stairs from where the golf carts are parked. The golf carts are maintained on a twice a year schedule, and also as needed. They do get 'put through their paces'. You would have found that if you did have a mechanical issue with the cart, we would have taken care of you with a 'loaner' cart. Not all of our properties contain athletic equipment, so we (Catalina Island Vacation Rentals) purchased putters, golf balls, tennis and croquet equipment and it is available to anyone to check out at the entry guard gate. We did find 3 good tennis rackets in the closet off of the kitchen, and one with 4 broken strings, so we disposed of it. We were surprised that you found it difficult to access the tennis courts. They are usually quite accessible.

Our villa rental rates do vary with regard to amenities, view and number of stairs. The complex does have some common patio areas, and fire code doesn't allow for blocking off between individual decks, however it is quite apparent where one patio ends and the other begins. This doesn't seem to have been much of an issue to our guests in the past. The Jacuzzi IS heated year round, so I'm confused about your issue there. Regarding the 'negativity' you mentioned with the Hamilton Cove Complex. With the large number of vacation rental villas, it is necessary to have posted rules and regulations for the safety of all and to ensure good neighborly behavior.

Thanks for taking the time to comment,

This property was nicely decorated and spacious enough for 2 adults and 2 children under 12.

The condo was not as clean as one would expect (in this price range).
-Dishes were dirty
-Hairs in kitchen and bedroom linens
-Bay windows were not cleaned (this is your ocean view)

The kitchen was not stocked with ANY basics, except for pots/pans/dirty dishes/paper towels/silverware.

NO COFFEE, oil, or basics which are standard at this rate.
NO Tupperware, plastic wrap, clean sponges, sugar bowl was empty, no steak/sharp knives. :(
NO BEACH TOWELS.
NO WASHING MACHINE or DRYER (???)
NO wine glasses ?
Unit came with a golf cart. Too bad it had little gas as we were told (gas gauge is broken too).

We were left a bottle of champagne upon arrival (nice!), however they do not have cork screws or bottle openers in unit????

After going into the rental office and advising of our lack of all problems and above necessities, a cork screw and extra bath towels were left in our room shortly thereafter. That was appreciated. We did not receive great service upon complaining, unfortunately.

I need to mention that unit 2-33 has roughly 70 steps UP to get to the only front door. Thankfully we are youngish and this wasn't a problem. However, getting 7 pieces of luggage (plus two kids) up those stairs was NOT fun. I would definitely steer away from this unit if over 50 years old and not in top notch health (due to the stairs, which were not mentioned). Make sure you ask about the stairs!!

Facts:

- The view is lovely and was the best part of this condo.
- Distance from downtown is a 15-20 minute golf cart drive. It is NOT walking distance to town.
- Found out that all of the front doors in Hamilton Cove have issues with keys working (I had to call the office for someone to let us in). I was told all the properties doors are the same. I couldn't open the door the entire trip...needed assist with their "special" way to open. Bizarre.
- The patio area is not private. It is shared and open with all units on this level. Disappointed, as pictures didn't depict this open area experience. Everyone appreciates a little privacy.
- BBQ was in great condition, but we did not use it.
- Decor was very nice and in line with price point.
- Very quiet!! And it was a holiday weekend. Enjoyed that!

I believe management should be taking better care of this lovely condo. Had it come with beach towels, coffee, knives, a few stock kitchen necessities - I think it would be a much better choice. But problems increased to a high degree as you will read below.

I don't like including so much negativity, but the cherry on top of our experience was on the 3rd day of being there, the toilets stopped working. Not just in our unit, the ENTIRE community. I will chalk this up to bad luck. They had to move everyone to other rentals in outside of Hamilton Cove! I can't imagine the chaos that causes the office staff. I have no idea if any reimbursement will be done for the inconvenience of moving to another property on the last night of our stay. I truly hope they do the right thing and discount for this major inconvenience. Will know by tomorrow!

I can't recommend this based on the multitude and high degree of problems. I think lots can be improved with ease/better management, minus the stairs!

Room Tip: Ask for ADA rooms if you want a rare single level with no steps. Inquire about the patio and if it...

The view is good, but so are many other units, for the same price, that provide so many more amenities than Unit 11-52.

The golf cart has no enclosure, there is only one television in the living room and none in either bedrooms, there is no internet, and although the management company will suggest using Wi-Fi from units close by, it does not work (and they should know that by now). After paying $400-$500 per night, you shouldn't be expected to pay an extra $10/day for internet. Even Motel 6 offers free Wi-Fi. Also, there is supposed to be free local and long distance calling from the unit's landline. In this unit, we could call locally, but when attempting to dial out of the area code, we would be directed to an 800 collect number.

We will not be choosing Unit 11-52 a second time.
