My wife and I recently returned (late Oct, 2012), from a short stay at the Vista Del Mar Hotel on Catalina where we celebrated the big 20. (along with a few college friends of course) By the way there is nothing like flying coast to coast to spend 4 days for an anniversary. Anyway we chose the Hotel Vista Del Mar by a referal from a long time Catalina Island resident/friend of ours. They were dead on. Perfect location, a short walk from the ferry landing. Central to downtown Avalon. Newly rennovated, this property is beautiful. Great tile work guys!! Inside the hotel is a quiet peaceful retreat that leaves you amazed the the "hustle" of Avalon is just two floors below your feet.

I suggest bringing/renting your snorkeling gear/ dive gear and get wet. The water around Catalina is amazing, kelp fields and brilliant fish, Garibaldi are the orange ones you'll see as you disembark the ferry on the island. Go visit Catalina, bring your wine from home if you like the good stuff (like my wife), super expensive there. Book your room at the Hotel Vista Del Mar a perfect lodge to top off a wonderful trip. So nice it was worth a 5000 mile round trip for four days!!

Room Tip: Use their beach chairs and towels. All the rooms are nice, quieter towards the back of the hotel. Have fun!!

We visited in November, as the weather cooled. We found the hotel rooms to be quite updated with luxurious touches such as the high sunroof in the bathroom, glass shower and rotating flatscreen TV. There is a library of DVDs to borrow for in-room viewing. Everything is very clean. There are less than 10 rooms and two suites (with ocean views), and a unique indoor/outdoor atrium which serves as the hallway. Great customer service and they will hold your baggage until your ship departs. One of the closest hotels to the boat dock and pier, where most attractions are centered. Note that the hotel is on the third floor and there is no elevator. One of the best restaurants in Avalon (Steve's Steakhouse) is on the second floor.

Room Tip: Only the two suites have an ocean view. They have a semi-private patio that is adjacent to the outdoor lobby.

Hands down best experience we have had!!!. Hotel very clean, beautiful view from the lobby. Went with my family and loved the milk and cookies at night. Hotel was soo comfortable and beautifully done. Staff was amazing always went all out to make your stay comfortable. Definitely will always try to stay here. We booked the fall special stayed one night but totally worth it. I was a little unsure due to little pricey but my husband and son didn't want to leave. Definitely worth it. We got there early room was not ready due to checkout time but once they had the room done they called us up and great service all the way through. This place is a great experience from romantic getaway to quick little family vacation they accommodate it all. Can't wait to come back.

I found this charming hotel on a website dedicated to lodging and restaurants on Catalina Island. After combing through several other hotels & reviews, I came across Vista Del Mar (VDM) and their fall special. I promptly booked a room for two nights for our wedding anniversary and completely surprised my wife. She couldn't believe how nice the rooms were and likened the experience to staying in a bed & breakfast. With the intimate feel, proximity to the beach, size of the rooms (the fireplace of course being her favorite amenity), milk & cookies and a helpful staff (thanks Alex), she spent Thanksgiving weekend gushing to her family and pointing out photos of VDM online.

Room Tip: This is a small hotel, and only the suites have the balcony overlooking the ocean. There are no bad rooms in this hotel.
