“Had a great experience.”
Reviewed January 29, 2006

This hotel definitely exceeded my expectations. It was very comfortable, clean and extremely quiet. With it being so close to the "action" I was very nervous about noise and it was never an issue. I had such a great time, I am already thinking about going back.

With all the rooms remodeled in the past 2 years, the room is a mix of sky blue, calming light green, and white paneling. Only an easy 10 minute walk from the docks. The front desk also sells tours that you can charge to your room. The people are very friendly and professional. The center of the U-shaped hotel is the lawn with lawn chairs and beautiful soCal palms and plantings. The morning breakfast is average with muffins, bagels, apples, cereals.

We left some clothing in the closet and realized it within a few hours. When we first called asking for help they said that they would not look until the next morning. When we called the next morning they said that the items were missing and would let us know whenever they found anything. We called day after day for help and the general manager dodged our calls every day and would never contact us or call us when we needed help. We don't know if it is because they are on an island and think they can treat their customers this way because they cannot come to confront them, but whatever it is their service is unacceptable and we would warn anyone that would choose to stay at their hotel to be aware that their employees have possibly stolen things from us and they will do nothing to help.

The Pavilion Lodge is walking distance from the Catalina Express Dock. It was very clean with a staff more than willing to help with anything. The breakfast in the morning was continental style and outdoor. The room was comfortable and seemed to be newly remodeled. It was right on the beach within walking distance to a grocery store, many restaurants, boat tours, etc. It was a perfect family vacation. The lodge could use a pool, but the ocean water was warm enough in October that it was not necessary to swim elsewhere. The lodge is a little more expensive than other lodging, but worth the money.

This hotel was in the perfect location. Just a short walk from the pier and right in the middle of the shopping district. It is also just steps from the beach. The rooms were clean and the decor made you feel like you were on the beach. Suprisingly, the rooms were very quiet, they are sheltered from the main drag. The breakfast was pretty good. There are some other nice services they offer, such as the baggage checking and the showers you can use after you check out (this is nice if you decide to go snorkeling, kayaking, or whatever the day that you plan to leave).

Hello all,

I had to go to Los Angeles last week for a business meeting on Wednesday afternoon and all day Thursday. I generally hate going to LA for all of the reasons most people hate going to LA. Anyway, I am an avid scuba diver and I had heard that Catalina Island had some interesting diving. As a result, I searched a number of hotels/motels on this site and chose to stay at the Pavilion from recommendations that I had read. My review is listed below:

A business colleague and I arrived in Los Angeles, rented a car and drove to Long Beach in order to catch the Catalina Express over to Avalon. You will need reservations for the boat ride (approximately $50 round trip), which you can get on-line. Catalina is approximately 25 miles west of LA and the ride takes about an hour. Parking for the trip is $12/day. The boat is nice and has a snack bar on board.

When we arrived in Avalon it was dark. There were a number of people arriving to pick up other passengers in golf carts. We waited for a while and I telephoned the Lodge to ask about a shuttle. Come to find out, the Lodge is well within walking distance from the landing. Took about 4 minutes to walk it, with luggage.

The Lodge itself isn't a Lodge it's a motel. It appears to have been built in the 1950's. I normally have mixed emotions about staying in motels, this was the exception. This may be the cleanest motel/hotel that I have ever stayed in. The room looked like something out of one of those catalogs my wife looks at, very very nice.

The motel is right in the heart of Avalon and it is very easy to get around. The motel has a complimentary continental breakfast at 7:30 a.m. I woke up early and hit the greasy spoon around the corner which opens at 6:00 a.m.

At 8:00, I walked around the corner to Scuba Luv and dove in the park which is about a 10 minute walk from the Lodge. Checked out and then hit the Express back over to LA.

What a fun experience. I will go back the next time I'm in the area.

My friend and I stayed in Room 101 (on the ground floor) November 17 through 20, 2005. What a nice surprise! Our room was clean and nicely furnished with 2 full sized beds, a hairdryer, an iron and ironing board, and a small refrigerator that we stocked with champagne, cheese, crackers, sandwiches, and fruit purchased at the C.C. Gallagher store and Deli a couple of doors down from the hotel. There's also a Vons Express a block away and a small Vons two blocks away. The large courtyard has several chaise lounges and several nice patio tables/chairs/umbrellas for relaxing in the sun or shade. The hotel serves their continental breakfast of coffee, decaf, a selection of teas, milk, OJ, cold cereal, hot oatmeal, bagels, muffins, pastries, cream cheese, apples, oranges, butter, and jams in the middle of the courtyard every morning from 7 until 11 a.m. This hotel is in a perfect location just a short stroll from the Catalina Express dock and on Crescent Ave -- 14 steps from the beach -- and right in the middle of all the shops and restaurants. You can book Discovery tours at the hotel's front desk for island tours and activities. The hotel offers a free service of delivering your luggage to the Catalina Express dock so you don't have to drag or carry your suitcases to the dock when you leave. The front desk staff were all very friendly and helpful. We had a couple of complaints -- the people in the room above ours stomped and jumped around at night. We called the front desk at 1:15 a.m. to complain and they took care of it immediately. Our room looked recently rennovated except for the carpet which was old and stained, but I would definitely stay there again. The carpet was well vacuumed and didn't leave any visible dirt on our bare feet so we ignored it. Our beds were comfortable and the nightly rate was $100.00 less than what I payed at the Metropole Hotel in Avalon several months ago. Show your AAA (auto club) card and get a big discount on your first night's stay. The Metropole was nice -- but for the money I'll choose the Pavilion Lodge any day.
