“Please Book The Metropole!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2006

My husband and I stayed at the Metropole in April 2004 after he proposed. The hotel is FABULOUS. It far exceeds any other hotel on Catalina, even the froofy Wrigley Mansion. It has excellent views, beautiful colors, an adorable marketplace with hair salon, food, shops, and most of all a great spa. It is worth every penny and I would recommend it to everyone. Please, please book the Metropole instead of any other Catalina hotel. It's worth it!

From Start to Finish:
Arriving in Catalina, the hotel does not have a courtesy van or shuttle. Not really a problem though, the hotel is only about 10 minutes down the street. Or it will cost you about $9.00 (2 people. in a shared van cab) Check in was easy, just like any other reputable hotel.

The room was very nice, very clean and decorated well. The room was very functional as well. Upon arrival the bed was turned down, there was a bottle of champagne on ice with two glasses. Plenty of optional lighting was available. The room had A/C, Heater and fireplace for comfort controls. Fireplace was adequate for effect although really did not have a nice flame. TV cabinet/minibar unit was nice, with plenty of channels to choose from. And a dvd player. Minibar was well stocked with average price for hotels. Desk (with stationary) with a lamp, dining table with two chairs, dresser with mirror and 6 drawers were all provided. The balcony had a very nice view with a wrought iron table and 2 chairs to enjoy.

The bathroom was adequate with enough towels for 2 or 3 persons. Terry cloth robes and slippers in the closet. Adequate amount of hangers (8-10). Shower was large, water pressure was excellent. Shower was very clean as well. Sink and vanity was nice, current and clean. A bit cluttered however. A shelf by the sink might be useful. Coffee maker and supplies were on the sink top.

Hotel staff was helpful and friendly. No problems, nothing spectacular to report either. The staff was somewhat informative. One night we had rented a movie from the list (at $8.00 a movie) it didn't play correctly when we called they asked us to come down, they didn't have a replacement so they credited us, without questions or reluctance.

The breakfast selection was perhaps the only complaint for the hotel. It was mediocre at best. They offered bagels, muffin, danish, coffee, tea, hot cocoa, bran cereal, yogurts, some fruit, orange juice. It was served outside the main entrance with the pigeons that were a bit too curious. There were only two seats for breakfast, but they did offere trays to take into the lobby or to your room. They just needed more selection.

Room service was available from one of the restaurants in the Marketplace. Same prices as the restaurant, good food, fast service. Menus available in the room. One touch dialing. Cannot bill to room though. Had to pay cash on spot.

Hotel is located in a good area, in the marketplace there is a coffee shop, pizza stand, day spa, mexican food, nail salon, a couple of souvenir shops, the BEST hot dog/hamburger place on the island. It was right around the corner from the Post Office and Vons. And walking distance (10-15 minutes) from just about anything you'd want to do.

Maid service and turn down service each day. Private outside elevator from street/marketplace. As well as hotel lobby elevator.

Upon checkout (11am), we had the option to check in our bags, then return to pick them up. Check out was easy and quick. (2 nights stay with a movie, some items from minibar came out to around $480.00 tax included)

We would surely return again for a casual stay on the island.

We recently stayed at the Metropole and were so happy with the service and our beautiful room. The hotel offers top of the line toiletries and beautiful Turkish towels and bath robes. We toured some of the other hotels to see what they were like and none compared. The Metropole is by far the most luxurious on the island. We will definately return.

Cleanliness and quiet, friendly staff, terrific continental breakfast (we had ours at 7am) and the rooms on the first floor are best for divers. Close to EVERYTHING yet still quietly tucked away. Very few hotels on Catalina Island have elevators-Hotel Metropole does! Prices are preposterous during all major holidays yet it seems to be that way everywhere. We stayed in the non-peak season and price was reasonable.
P. S. Our bathroom was very spacious, very good water pressure, and movable showerhead, and plenty of fresh towels.

Truly nice, clean hotel right near the water. Staff was very friendly. Stayed in a spacious room with a fireplace that exceeded my expectations. Would definitely stay there again.

Certainly a beautiful spacious room with DVD, snack bar, fireplace, large bath. And you can't beat their continental breakfast!! Best I have ever encountered. They had everything but eggs!

LATE START ON BREAKFAST!
What is with hotels that start breatkfast so late! Yes, there are people who arise early and who go to bed earlier. There was no coffeemaker in the room. There is a coffee maker in the lobby, but I'm not sure how fresh that was.

LATE CHECK-IN TIME?
Checking in at 3:00 is too late. You have to hang around town with your luggage in tow, just because you cannot check in before 3:00pm. Get in late, and get out early!

Nice place!!!

Traveled to Avalon for a wedding and selected the Metropole on recommendation of the bride and groom who chose it for wedding headquarters. Spacious room, nicely furnished, fireplace, etc. (deluxe courtyard view) --would compare room to an upscale Westin. This is a small hotel; do not expect large public areas. There is a small roof top area and spa. Paid high season rates but off - season this would be a great value.
