We bought our timeshare about 4 years ago and have been coming here every time. This was our 2nd Easter spending it with our Mountain Retreat family and they made it extra special for our little 4 year old in surprising him with his Easter bag of treats. The rooms get better every time we come up with the new upgrades. The clubhouse is gorgeous and from the moment you walk in the hospitality is awesome. Met the new Mgmt Jennifer and they have great plans on more upgrades.
The unit is very clean, big for the 3 of us (unit 20) but allows our young one to explore and play in different areas. Look forward to our next trip.

We are returning to Mountain Retreat after 2 years. It was obvious that the management had heard our concerns. There are now reading lamps by each sofa and each twin bed in the second bedroom. The unit was newly painted with all new furniture. The first thing I noticed was how clean the refrigerator was. The new clubhouse is lovely and very well planned out. Our2 bedroom 2.5 bath unit is large enough that we all could spread out to relax.

This morning, at the delicious pancake breakfast (free), we met Jennifer the manager and her husband Andrew the facilities manager. They were very personable and seemed to really enjoy the property and the guests. They seem to know the needs of each unit well. They said that our unit is getting new carpet in the fall. In fact, all of the staff are really nice and friendly. It has been nice to see Sheila's friendly face each time we come, too.

It didn't hurt that our weather has been really nice.

We have visited our Mountain Retreat dozens of times. Winter, spring, summer or fall there is always something to do or see. Area wineries, caves, lakes, museums and trails keep us busy any time of the year. We also enjoy local theater productions in Columbia and close-by Sonora. If you have kids try fishing in local .streams or lakes, there is even a sure bet at the Trout farm u-catch in Columbia. In the summer our favorite places are Lake Alpine and Calaveras Big Trees State Park, just four miles up Highway 4. In the winter Bear Valley is great for a family ski outing. Gold rush towns Murphys and Jamestown are fun any time of the year.
If you like to simply relax the spacious (1100-1500 sq ft) two bedroom, two bath units with fireplace are very comfortable. You can cook in the fully equipped kitchen or enjoy great food at one of a dozen or so local restaurants. Everybody enjoys a swim in the indoor pool at the clubhouse which also features a pool table and exercise room with a full range of equipment and free weights. And if you like golf there is a course right across the street and another down the road about six miles. Jen and the rest of the staff are wonderful and friendly, attending to every request. They offer a free ice cream social Wednesdays and a free pancake breakfast Sunday mornings. If you want to go to the BBQ it will cost $5 a head Friday eve.

Room Tip: The Calistoga units are our favorites. Try to get one by the creek. Summer is very busy. You will...

We have been members here since 1988 and have always been very pleased with our vacations here. And under the new management, it is even better. It is located in a beautiful forest area with Calaveras Big Trees State Park just up the road, a very nice Logging Museum in town and Columbia State Park not far away. There are caverns to visit, several wineries and of course Angels Camp, known for its Jumping Frog contest.

We've stayed in hotel and motel rooms all over the planet, but there was no bigger surprise, a pleasant one, than when we checked into our room at the Mountain Retreat Resort. I'm not sure whether it was because I didn't read their website carefully when I booked the room, or they simply don't do their rooms justice in the description. I suspect it's the latter.

When it said "two-bedroom suite" I had just assumed it would be your typical hotel room, with the two queen beds, night stand in-between and the TV on the dresser a few feet away, plus one more room just like it. Way off!

If fact, I should stop referring to it as a "room." What we walked into when we entered the front door (by keyless entry) was basically a three-story condo. We were stunned to find it was even two levels, and then we found another flight of stairs that led to the second bedroom on the third floor!

The main bedroom was on the first floor. The second floor was made up of a large living area, including a full kitchen, fireplace, couch, dining table and a flat-screen TV. The rear door on this level led outside to a wooden staircase and a private patio with table and chairs. Frankly, we were almost giddy with delight as we explored our new digs, and were disappointed only in that we were only staying one night.

The hotel also offers an indoor swimming area with a pool and spa, both of which were kept at just the right temperature. Lights in both changed the color of the water every few seconds, from red to blue to green, a bonus that I found to add to the atmosphere.

If you don't have a friendly staff at your hotel, you might as well close up shop. So I'll just mention in passing that we enjoyed talking to the outgoing and helpful people who work here, from the front desk folks to the GM. And on Sunday morning a small but welcome brunch (free) was offered, with pancakes, sausage, fruit (berries!), coffee and juice.

We went to the Mountain Retreat Resort to celebrate my wife's 50th birthday, and we couldn't have made a better choice. Throughout our stay I kept teasing my wife that I had spent $600 to come here, but that she was worth it. The truth was the cost to stay, on a Saturday night, was a mere $118. When we left we took a picture of the main building and both of us said the same thing: We'll be back!
