We've stayed in hotel and motel rooms all over the planet, but there was no bigger surprise, a pleasant one, than when we checked into our room at the Mountain Retreat Resort. I'm not sure whether it was because I didn't read their website carefully when I booked the room, or they simply don't do their rooms justice in the description. I suspect it's the latter.

When it said "two-bedroom suite" I had just assumed it would be your typical hotel room, with the two queen beds, night stand in-between and the TV on the dresser a few feet away, plus one more room just like it. Way off!

If fact, I should stop referring to it as a "room." What we walked into when we entered the front door (by keyless entry) was basically a three-story condo. We were stunned to find it was even two levels, and then we found another flight of stairs that led to the second bedroom on the third floor!

The main bedroom was on the first floor. The second floor was made up of a large living area, including a full kitchen, fireplace, couch, dining table and a flat-screen TV. The rear door on this level led outside to a wooden staircase and a private patio with table and chairs. Frankly, we were almost giddy with delight as we explored our new digs, and were disappointed only in that we were only staying one night.

The hotel also offers an indoor swimming area with a pool and spa, both of which were kept at just the right temperature. Lights in both changed the color of the water every few seconds, from red to blue to green, a bonus that I found to add to the atmosphere.

If you don't have a friendly staff at your hotel, you might as well close up shop. So I'll just mention in passing that we enjoyed talking to the outgoing and helpful people who work here, from the front desk folks to the GM. And on Sunday morning a small but welcome brunch (free) was offered, with pancakes, sausage, fruit (berries!), coffee and juice.

We went to the Mountain Retreat Resort to celebrate my wife's 50th birthday, and we couldn't have made a better choice. Throughout our stay I kept teasing my wife that I had spent $600 to come here, but that she was worth it. The truth was the cost to stay, on a Saturday night, was a mere $118. When we left we took a picture of the main building and both of us said the same thing: We'll be back!

We traveled to Mountain Retreat Resort (MRR) Feb 14 - 17 for a snow trip with our friends. And was a wonderful trip!

MRR is comprised of several 2 bedroom cabins and there are about 4 different layouts. Each of the groups in our party (3 groups total) where in a different cabin with different layouts. Ours was two-stories with 2 bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths. Each cabin is equipped with a fully functioning kitchen that has all the pots, pans, utensils, cookware, plates and glasses you may need. The kitchens also contain dishwashers and the resort even leaves you a couple of packets of dish washing liquid. Each cabin also is equipped with a stacked washer and dryer. The bathrooms are a decent size as well as the bedrooms. A plus, is that the beds are very comfy. We couldn't of been happier with the unit.

There is the town of Arnold just down the hill where you can pick up groceries and anything you may need. Also, Bear Valley ski resort is just a 40 minute drive from MRR.

I highly recommend MRR if you are staying in Arnold. We may make this an annual trip.

Please note that cell reception was non-existent for us during our trip. So be prepared for that.

Room Tip: If you are traveling with others be sure to get units close to each other.

We are long time owners and always have a wonderful time when we visit. We scheduled a January vacation time in order to ski but won't blame the resort for no snow. The units are very large and very comfortable; everything worked perfectly. The remodeled clubhouse including the new indoor pool is beautiful. We love visiting Calveras Big Trees, Murphys, and Angels Camp whenever we go to Mountain Retreat. We'll be back in June.

We had a nice time .. Wasn't prepared for the snow storm however we made the best of it and really enjoyed ourselves.. The staff went out of there way to go out and purchase chains for us and assist with placing them on our tires. What great service.

Green Features: Housekeeping made a practice of separating the bins in order to recycle and made sure that the common area was always clear.

Myself, my wife and 2 and 3 yr old daughters stayed here from 21st Dec to 30th Dec. We have visited California several times before, but never to Arnold before. We were trying to get our Christmas break in Lake Tahoe, but, for several reasons couldn't.
We didn't book this place until about a week before and only did so based on tripadvisor reports.......and we were not disappointed.
The staff were all very friendly from check in to departure. They were always extremely helpful and genuinely friendly.
When we checked in we were allocated house number 2. This was very close to the clubhouse. The house/cabin itself was great! It was clean, very spacious, had a very well equipped kitchen, large fireplace, 2 spacious bedrooms with very comfy beds and 2 full bathrooms.
The following are not really negatives, but observations........I found the lighting in the living room very difficult to create the right 'ambience'. It did seem quite dull, but, putting the lights on created an unpleasant light (too bright?). I think the living room would have benefitted from a couple more table lamps, or something similar, to create a cozy atmosphere. Get your fire going and have all the lights off and it feels really cozy!
We really enjoyed our balcony at lunchtimes (yes, warm and sunny in Dec) and in the evening for star-gazing. However, the balcony did suffer from loose spindles and hand-rails. There was some evidence of rotting wood, which I think requires attention. There was also some trim missing on the balcony door outside - which was quite unsightly.
Inside, the decor felt quite old and 'patchy'. It was in keeping with the character of the accomodation, but, could do with attention here and there. I get the feeling that cabin number 2 was one of the older cabins. There were several vanes missing on the blinds in the living room and one of the bedrooms (this was mentioned to the staff on check-out and they did make a note of it).
Would I stay in cabin number 2 again - yes, but, it would be a nicer stay if the minor issues were addressed. The balcony definitely requires attention - especially considering young children may be using it.
The clubhouse was brilliant! My girls loved gong to the pool. The ice cream and pancake socials were fantastic. We were new to these 'socials' , but really enjoyed it. The staff made them very enjoyable. The sitting area up in the clubhouse looked really Christmassy and cosy. They had a lovely, big tree in place and stockings on the fireplace.
The location of mountain retreat resort was, kind of, in the middle of nowhere. That said, directly across the road was a large golf course. I'm not a golfer but we went into the restaurant and bar area for a look around - it looked fantastic. The restaurant looked amazing. They made the golf club look really Christmassy and welcoming. We didn't eat there though, so I can't comment on the food/drink.
Back to the MRR area - although in the middle of nowhere, the lack of road noise, peace and quiet and beautiful clean air smells made for a beautiful location.
Arnold was only a couple of miles away. It had several restaurants, some shops and a decent super market. The only restaurant we used was the Snoe shoe brewery, which was great. On both occasions we went it was really busy. Service a little slow, but, good food and great beer! We wanted to try the Italian restaurant, but never got round to it.
The super market was, surprisingly, reasonable value. You could get all your food and drink shopping here without any problems.
Regarding the things to do while you stay in Arnold...we drove up to the ski area about 18 miles up the road to get to some snow, we had 2 visits to Columbia, 2 visits to Murphy's, and just locally in Arnold too. The drive up the road to the ski area was always a lovely, scenic drive, which I enjoyed. Just before you get to the ski resort, on the left, there's a hill suitable for sledding. We parked in the lay by, along with others, and enjoyed a couple of hours with other people in the snow!
What every one says about Murphy's is true - it's a lovely, quirky place. Very relaxed and friendly. We ate there twice - at firewood - a really great place. We popped into Murphy's hotel too - well worth a look.
All in all - a brilliant Christmas break. I'm sure we would return to Mountain Retreat Resort, sometime in the future!

Room Tip: Try and get a more recently renovated cabin

Green Features: A lack of emphasis on recycling we thought....not enough recycling bins.
