“Great Spot for checking out HSU”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2012

We booked two nights here for our trip to HSU's spring preview.

We have two teenage daughters and found the room to be plenty big enough for all their gear and ours.

The door opens directly to the outdoors, no problem for us at all, I just never know when that is going to be the case.

Breakfast was satisfying. We don't require too much, a toasted bagel with honey and peanut butter and a banana can hold us over until lunch time quite easliy. The coffee was hot and flavored creamers were available.

Lastly, the bed was comfortable and the pillows plentiful.

The City was cleaning out the water lines while we were there which caused brown water in the faucet, shower and toilet. It was not the hotel's fault, so I can't complain too much. We worked around it for the several hours that it was an issue.

I was happy with this hotel.

Room Tip: We were on the first floor. I did not hear anyone above us walking around during our stay.

I don't know what is happening to Best Western. They're slipping. Only one BW that we have stayed in recently was up to Par. That's the one at the east end of Palm Springs with the 24 hr. pool. The outdoor hottub/pool is at one end of the property away from any rooms. Now This one, we specifically told them to put our visiting son/daughter-in-law with a one month old, coming in rainy February here, ON The First Floor. There are plenty of First floor rooms. They SAID no problem. Then put them on the 2nd floor! Did they think we wouldn't find out? It's bad enough that this BW is not one building to begin with. You HAVE to walk OUTSIDE whenever you leave your room. and cross the Parking LOT to get to the pool or breakfast. in the rain. and it rained all four days that they were here. We are finding more and more that they just say anything. tell to WRITE IT DOWN for any one else working there. They must have thought we put them in the cheapest place we could find. which it Was not. When the other son/daughter-in-law and kids visited, we put them in the Hampton Inn on the same street. FYI: we only have a single wide mobile home with a 2nd bedroom where only a twin bed that can fit.

Room Tip: Don't trust what any hotel "promises" you. be ready to stand your ground when you have...

We made a reservation online and indicated we had 2 cats. We made our decision to stay there based on how pet friendly everyone said they said they were and because they indicated they were pet friendly on their website. We got to the motel and attempted to check in and were told they don't accept cats. I questioned them about this policy in light of indicating they were pet friendly. They told us they just accept dogs and that it says so on the website. I asked them to check with the Best Western in Grants Pass where we had stayed the night before to see what kind of guests the cats had been. They were not interested in doing this. They said we could have the cats stay if they were only in their cat carriers...not sure how cats can use the cat pan when they are in a cat carrier. So we left. We went back to their website and it
says they are pet friendly, accept up to 2 dogs per room and in small print it says they accept
cats at their discretion. We got not discretion, they just told us no cats and they might let us have the cats but only if they stayed in the carriers 100% of the time. They were not couteous and unwilling to help us find an alternative place to stay. We will be writing Best Western corporate to register our complaint.

After much review from TripAdvisor readers, and a good recommendation from Humboldt University staff, we selected the Best Western Arcata Inn as our choice to stay for 2 nights while scouting the university. Clean. Bedding Clean and soft! Reception staff quick, friendly and helpful. We checked in at just before 4pm, and room was ready. Fresh smelling, no smoke, two double beds and new flatscreen tv. Fast wireless internet, FREE, and reliable. Make sure to tell reception that you'll be needing internet at checkin, and she'll hand you a login and password sheet. New bathroom and fixtures, all the coffee fixings. Close to the university, 1 exit away. Little road noise. Hotel filled up as the evening went on. Obviously a good choice.
I checked the heater, which was off when we got to the room. Turned it on for a few minutes. Efficient - it quickly heated the room. Manually turned it off. Now room is perfect for sleeping.

Room Tip: On second floor. Stairs are unprotected. Close to parking though, so even in the rain and no umbre...

Our room was sweltering when we walked in. The floor lamp wouldn't turn on, and neither would the tv. This was not the greatest of beginnings to our overnight stay. However, after a call to the front desk, and a visit from a very friendly young woman, everything was set in order. She crawled behind the tv console and restored the power. Apparently some workers had been working on the room the day before and had disconnected some electrical outlets and had turned the heat way up. The critical side of me says that the room should have been ready to receive guests. On the other hand, I did appreciate the quick response from the front desk.

Not much else to say about our stay. We came, we slept, we ate breakfast. The room was clean. Breakfast choices included fresh waffles with the do-it-yourself waffle maker and fresh fruit. I don't know why so many hotels, this one included, insist upon blaring the tv news when families are eating in the breakfast room. Can't we do without reports of the latest political squabbles, gun violence and sex scandals? If people want to watch this stuff in their rooms, so be it. But why not allow families to eat their breakfast without it?

Exceptionally clean. Friendly, helpful staff. Great free cookies in the lounge. Nice grounds for the pet.
Very well located to all area attractions.

For the best Mexican style food the Valley Azteca across the street has the best in the area or maybe anywhere. The mole is as good as it gets and the huarache is a delight. No gloppy stuff here, real taste is the idea.

Nothing fancy but a satisfactory hotel and a comfortable room with polite and helpful staff. I felt fine staying here as a solo traveler. Give this hotel a try instead of the Best Westerns in Eureka.
