The hotel was very accommodating to me and my dog ($5 per night extra plus a $50 pet deposit which you get back makes this the cheapest dog friendly hotel I could find in town). I loved the claw foot tub in the bathroom and the old pictures in the hallways. The place was clean and pretty quiet, being the middle of the week in summer in a college town. The staff was very nice and helpful and able to answer my many questions about the area and the hotel, as well as give me directions. As for location, you couldn't ask for better than the Hotel Arcata's. It's right in the middle of downtown, on a beautiful plaza surrounded by all of the little mom and pop businesses that give Arcata such an awesome flavor. It's also close to beaches, coastal marshland, Humboldt State University and of course the Arcata Community Forest. As other reviewers have noted, you will be asked for money by the many vagrants that hang out on the plaza, but I found them to be very nice and I felt perfectly safe walking out of the bars at 1AM to go back to my room (not that you have to go very far). Honestly, nobody should be surprised to see bums and stoners hanging out enjoying the sun in the middle of town - it's Humboldt county! There was only one thing I really didn't like about my stay and that would be the parking situation - you have to park your car a couple blocks away from the hotel unless you are loading or unloading out front. It's really not that big of a deal for me but I thought other people might want to know. Overall I would absolutely recommend this to anyone needing a place to stay in Arcata. It's the best way to immerse yourself in the local culture and a perfect home base for exploring the area.

Looking for a cool place in Arcata to party with the locals? The Hotel Arcata is for you! Don't care if some of the local club kids pass out at 3am in the hall? The Hotel Arcata is for you. If you don't mind the passed out drunk in the hall the Arcata Police will cart em off.

Too bad the management can't keep the trash out of this place, it is a nice old hotel.

If you want to sleep before 3 am, stay away!!!!

I liked thsi cool old hotel in the historic town square of Arcata. It's close to bars and restaurants which is great when you're at the bar/restaurant, but not so great when you're in your room trying to sleep.

The room was big and the town was cool. I like old places like this, but if you want all the modern comforts, you shoudl go elsewhere.

This hotel is old and VERY run down, in other words a DUMP! The room was dirty/smelly/old and way over priced at $116/night. Nice to have a huge spider hanging around the bathroom; killed one but another showed up the next day, wife was not happy. She wanted to leave when she saw the room, but at 6pm with a dinner appointment at 6:15 what could we do. So we stayed there 2 nights, but will never do so again. Do yourself a large favor, find another place!

If you want to stay in "downtown" Arcata you have no choice but to stay at this "historic" hotel. It's smack in the middle of the town square so you are close to restaurants, shops, a food coop and a string of bars that are next door. The rooms are circa 1915 and have little comfort (incliuding a hard bed, mediocre pillows, slow Wifi, funky plumbing and a stale smell throughout); some may consider this quaint and part of the "Humboldt experience", I found it unappealing and longed for a Best Western.

Tons of stoners and drunks abound outside, complete with public urination and stumbling stupidity, just to make your "Humboldt experience" complete. All the more reason to stay outside the town square.
