Preparation great but could taste the tang of just being a bit too old and not fresh.

We finally went to Ma Maison after talking about trying it for a while - and Au Midi was closed for vacation for the week. It wasn't very good and we were disappointed. It is set in a quaint house off Soquel Drive - and that's the most positive thing I can say. As we walked in, the smell reminded me of my grandparents house. Our server seemed unhappy to be there and made no effort to chat with us or give us recommendations - he just seemed impatient for us to decide what we wanted to order. Our salads were huge - way too big for an appetizer, but fresh and reasonably OK. We then ordered the lamb and the 'duck and duck'. We couldn't find anything to like about either of them. The lamb didn't have much flavor and came with a polenta that looked like it had been squeezed out of a piping bag. The sliced duck breast was OK but the skin wasn't crispy and the sauce, although described as a 'port wine sauce' had no more seen a bottle of port than I had. The duck leg was just plopped on the plate unceremoniously - no sauce near it - and was dry and so over salted as to be unpalatable. The mashed potatoes tasted as though they had just been reconstituted - and once again squeezed to death out of a piping bag.
There are many good reviews of Ma Maison and we think that perhaps it has either changed management recently or the usual chef was away. Unfortunately I don't think we will be back. Next time Au Midi is closed (which isn't very often) we'll go somewhere else.

Located in a small house in Aptos you will find some of the best prepared food on Monterey Bay. We have had some of the best salmon, steaks and sauces at this local favorite.

One of the best shallot butters I have ever had. We were seated in a table just in front of the fireplace on a wintery night. Good wine, lovely food and the service pleasantly French but without pretense. Reasonably priced. I am looking to return.

Chef is french, married to local gal. the restaurant is the best of both. Love the food, it is as real french cooking as you can get around here, better than a lot of places is Paris. Service is excellent. What a terrific deal. We try to get there at least once a month. We'd eat there every day were time and money not something of an issue.
