“I've finally stayed in every room!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 2, 2005

Well, Iv'e finally had a chance to stay in every room at the inn. We have family in the Aptos area and needed to get a room for a big family celebration, so we ended up at Sand Rock Farm. It's heaven! We haven't stayed with family since. All of the rooms are large with really comfortable beds. The decorum is very tasteful craftsmen style. The architecture and grounds are stunning. And the best, which I've saved for last, the food is"Oh my God!" good.
We've had the opprotunity to attend two of the wine maker dinners. We felt like we were living in the pages of Sunset magazine. The atmosphere, the wine, the wonderful people we met and the food were just amazing. The dinners were the best meal ever; course after course. Second best, is the breakfast that comes with every stay. Breakfast is always plenty to eat. All of the foods are prepared fresh with goods from local growers. I wish I could recall the names of some of the dishes, but if you stay there the inn keeper or chef will explain some the special sauces and processes.
My favorite room is the "Sun Porch Suite". It's huge with an attatched reading porch all it's own. The Coast is cool, so it's a great place to warm up with a book. My second favorite room is the giant suite up stairs(I can't remember names). I think it's the largest room. In addition to the large bed and sitting area, there's this jet tub that sits in it's own alcove. You can draw the cutains and melt away. All of the rooms are good.
Even though the inn is just off the road, it's one of the quietest inn we've stayed at(lot's of trees I guess). It's always warm and cozy after a day in the cool coast air. We've never over heated on the Northern California Coast, but on rare occassion it does get warm. Few, if any, shops, businesses, homes, or inns have air. Throw off the cudley down comforter, bring layers of clothes and open your lungs to the cool fresh air.
We now can't wait to visit family and get pampered somewhere out of the valley heat.
There's a huge variety of sites and activies in the area. You'll be right near the beaches and the coastal range. We love to find a resteraunt right on the water and enjoy some fresh fish and chips.

The pictures made the Sand Rock Farm look like a new building in an ideal setting. After reading about the food, we were committed. The reality was very mixed. The food was superb! Fresh, perfectly ripened melon was accompanied by a very nice fritata. The grounds and the multilayered deck were beautiful. Our room was very nice and included its own jacuzzi. However, we spent a miserable night in the room because there is no air conditioning and the portable fan just couldn't fight the heat. We couldn't even move it closer to the bed or the window because the cord wasn't long enough and there wasn't a table to put it on. The common areas contain a collection of old furiture, old rugs and old woodwork. It's my opinion that the common areas need some attention.

Historic Sand Rock Farm is just that, a historic 10 acre Santa Cruz County property once a 1000 acre working farm and producing winery in the 1880's. Please see the Fodor's review below for a great description of our tasteful restoration.

The centerpiece of our ideal setting (in close proximity to the ocean and Pacific Coast Highway 1) is our beautifully renovated farmhouse, which features gorgeous redwood detailing from the turn of the last century. In keeping with the moderate climate California's Central Coast is blessed with, we do not have air conditioners in the rooms. Each room has electric fans available, all of which have access to outlets and small tables nearby to set them on for cooling breezes when desired.

The five spacious guestrooms and expansive living room, dining room, halls, and front sun porch are all tastefully decorated with period-appropriate furnishings and artwork. The couches and chairs in the sitting areas all have shapely vintage frames, reupholstered when we renovated the inn to coordinate with the luxurious handknotted Arts&Crafts style rugs selected to highlight the mellow wood floors and bring the rooms together.

We welcome travelers with a desire to experience the elegance of days past with modern luxuries such as jacuzzi tubs for two, seasonal gourmet breakfasts, fabulous area restaurants and stunning local wines, and our ten-acre grounds with luxuriant gardens, footpaths and fountains.
