I only live a few miles from this place. Anytime I get the chance to come to Black Diamond Mines, I have a great time and am able to clear my head and release the daily stress of life....
There are miles and miles of trails for hikers and bikers. The history behinds the minds is a great learning experience too.

Have your kids (age 7 or older) see and learn about early California Gold Rush history, child labor in the 1800's, as well as geology when you take a Hazel Atlas Mine tour when you visit Black Diamond. Visit the East Bay Regional Parks District website to book a tour of the mine (just $6 per person).

There is a brief uphill walk o the mine of less than 1/2 mile on dirt trail, then mines themselves are easy mainly flat walking except a few sets of stairs. Well lit, spacious and tour guides are well informed. Well worth the drive to this remote part of Contra Costa County.

Black Diamond is one of my favorite places to hike in the East Bay. The trails are well maintained, offer hills and flats, and spectacular views. Don't skip the Rose Hill cemetery! The headstones tell the history of the people that worked the fields and mines around this area. Another must see is the mine tours. Check the east bay parks website for times and tour details. Last but not least, this park offers views of plenty of wildlife, hawks soaring over the canyons, kestrels hovering in their hunt for a meal, and coyotes roaming the hills. The hills can be a challenge but well worth it for the views. You can take a short hike less than anhour or take some of the longer trails for a 3-4 hour hike, take a picnic and enjoy the nature.

The tour of this old coal/sand mine is neat.....good background while you take a just-the-right-amount walk through the mine. On hot days, this is a very pleasant experience, as the inside is always in the mid50's. It is large enough to not get any type of claustrophobia too. The visitors center is worth a trip too. It felt hidden away, which added to the uniqueness of this trip. If you plan to hike, bring plenty of water this time of the year.
