This museum looks small from the front but actually houses five building plus outdoor exhibits. Docents were very knowledgable and able to give a great overview in a short amount of time. They are in the midst of adding a wi-fi compatible system for touring and research. This would be a great site for classes on 4th grade California history trips as well as families traveling this gold rush/ Mark Twain area.

Fun museum with tons of history. Covers everything from Mark Twain to goldmining to carriages. Docents were so much fun and willing to share their knowledge. There was a scavenger hunt for the kids. Good shady picnic area in the parking area. One of our favorite stops in the Calaveras.

Amazing museum with scads of antiques! The docents were VERY knowledgeable and eager to share the history of their county. From the road it looks like a small-town little museum, but when you go in it opens to several buildings and acres of history. Must see.

This is one of the nicest, cleanest and well laid out museum we have ever visited. We, too, were just passing by and the lady at the tourist info suggested we stop. Definitely worth the time. The "guide" we extremely well informed and very interesting. We could have spent all day. Beautifully maintained.

We went there on a whim, not expecting much and boy were we in for a surprise. It was really nice. Much bigger than it looks from the front.

It has a lot of history about mining and carriages. One of the guides was a history teacher and he was very interesting to listen to. Kids might go through it a little faster than adults. We had no kids so we stayed there quite awhile.

There is a picnic table, a great tree to climb and a little outside theatre in the back. The staff is wonderful, very friendly.
We have enclosed some photos.
