I researched for months trying to find the best suite for our family. I compared Howard Johnson, Desert Palms, Portofino and several others. I'm really happy with our decision to stay at the Howard Johnson. My only reservation had been the 2-1/2 star rating, but I think it deserves higher (obviously it's not the Four Seasons so don't expect that!). The kids suites were fabulous. We had a separate bedroom from our kids (5 and almost 3) who had bunk beds in the other room. The bed was really comfortable, room was clean and we heard no noise from the freeway (something I was concerned with before our stay). The location could not have been better. The walk was easily 7-8 minutes even with a pregnant lady and a toddler (keep in mind this is about the same distance as Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel). I think it was closer to the entrance than either Portofino or Desert Palms. We didn't get to use Castaway Cove (the little water park at the hotel) but would have if we had more time and warmer weather. Other positive notes: free parking and free internet. They didn't have continental breakfast, but with a small fridge in the room, we just had cereal in our room most mornings. We'll definitely stay here again.

We stayed here mid November 09. Our initial reaction to our room was a little disappointing as it was very basic. However, we really only needed a bed to sleep in as we planned to be out everyday very early and not get back until late. The hotel was so close to Disneyland we found that we really enjoyed the walk down to the park as it gave us time to walk off the huge breakfasts we had at either Mimi's Cafe or Denny's (which was further down the road). One morning we opted to go into Disneyland later. The children had an absolute ball at Pirates Cove and the pool. The gift shop stocked all the basic essentials, especially washing powder which I needed a couple of times during our stay. The washing machines were clean and big enough to accomodate all our dirty laundry. The staff were helpful but always seemed very busy either on the phone or with people checking in. The rooms were fairly clean however there was some coffee stains that had been spilled down a wall that had not been cleaned. The bathroom looked like it needed a make over. Tiles were cracked and toilet bowl stained. None of the sink plugs closed properly. Fridge in room was missing all of its shelves so we couldn't store much in it. Overall, we would recommend this hotel purely for its proximity to Disneyland and restaurants. Pool area and Pirates Cove are other winners at this location.

We stayed here in the cheapest room and it was roomy enough for 2 adults and 3 kids. There's a fridge so you can buy groceries and save on breakfast/lunch costs.

Pool area is fantastic with slides, bucket that fills and tips out. Went there every afternoon after Disneyland and kids played there. Also a hot tub which is not very relaxing for adults as there are kids everywhere. For this reason I recommend this hotel for people with children, but not those wanting a relaxing time by the pool! There is however another quieter pool at the back of the hotel.

Hotel is about a 10 minute walk to Disneyland. Plenty of parking onsite. Lots of restaurants and McDonalds nearby. This hotel is right on the freeway so I was worried about noise. But with our door closed we couldn't hear a thing (and I'm a light sleeper). Can see fireworks at night from some rooms or from the carpark. Handy supermarket/souvenier shop onsite, and few video/pinball games for older kids.

Great value at $60 per night including 3 kids - just book ahead to get the great rates.

Good nice walk to the park. But we stayed in the building right up against freeway, and could hear freeway all night, stay in the other buildings.

Howard Johnson Hotel, excellent Hotel for down under familys (anybody really). The location to the Disneyland theme Parks is very convenient, less then a 10 minute walk and you should be outside the main Park entrance. Plenty of family restaurants within easy walking distance from Hotel, we ate out most nights and honestly cant say we had any bad meals ,also no problem walking around the theme Park areas at night felt very Safe. Downtown Disney district has some excellent Shops and finer dining Restaurants. All meals in the States are huge,so dont bother with the starter otherwise you wont fit in the main :) and dont forget the tip.

The Hotel, Firstly big thankyou to all the friendly Staff at the Hojo. Anyone travelling from New Zealand will know that you will probably arive into LA rather early in the morning, the staff were more then happy to give us an early check in(8.30am) at no extra charge.
We stayed in Building 1on the top floor, in a King Suite, the room was very clean and tidy and the beds are by far the most comfortable iv ever stayed in on Holiday. The veiw was amazing however beware we got this room mostly because we wanted to see the Disney Fire works display from the comfort of our own balcony, The veiws are obscured (very tall trees) and the noise from the theme Parks is also loud, i have read reviews where people talk about the noise from the I-5 freeway which is next to Hotel, They are also true,if your room is on the freeway side, but the theme park noise is like a constant humming in the background.Basically if you are a light sleeper, then sorry you are going to hear some Noise. Best Advice is to get a room over in the Garden pool area as the noise wouldnt be so great, and also a room on the lower or ground levels. Personally i feel that any Hotel in the direct Theme Park area would get some level of Noise, its a busy place, its Disneyland after all !!
The pools are great, the pirate theme park was a hit with all the kids and a great place to meet other Familys, there is also a spa pool next to this watery playground for the parents to unwind/ relax in whilst keeping an eye on the little ones.Garden pool is on the other side of the Hotel and was much more quiet, great for reading and sunbathing. We were there in late Oct early Nov and the temp was about 26 degrees perfect for swimming.
The Hotel has free internet in main reception area (only two) so pick your times, the gift shop has everything you need from plasters to Wine and the prices are good, there is also a gaming arcade next to the giftshop.
We booked all our Tours and theme dinners from the reception which was a breeze, and we were always picked up and delivered back to the hotel after the tours.

All said and done, i really enjoyed staying at this Hotel the only letdown is there isnt any restaurant in the Hotel itself, Mimis Cafe which is directly across the road has good New Orlean style food, they also do take out, which we found easier/faster then waiting for a table.
Finally to all those Kiwis, Aussies and Brits who need a tea fix, bring your own favourite Teabags and you will also need to ask the reception for a jug/kettle when you check in.
Melton Tackle (huge game fishing Shop) is only a 6minute $10 dollar taxi ride away, Disneyland for Blokes!!!
