We stayed at the Howard Johnson recently for our family Disneyland vacation. When we first got to the hotel I was surprised at how old it was (it was built in like 1965). Despite its age the property is well maintained. We enjoyed our stay and it was great to be within walking distance to Disneyland. I would recommend it to others, especially those with young kids. If it was more updated and our air conditioner would have worked, then I would probably rate it higher.

Pros:

The hotel is close enough to Disneyland that you can walk. We walked back and forth from the hotel to Disneyland at least once a day. We usually ate breakfast somewhere on our way to Disneyland.

The Castaway Cove waterpark at the hotel is great for kids. I thought that it was more fun than lots of the things that we did at Disneyland. There is also a larger pool, but I never went to it.
There is a large flat screen in each room with quite a few channels.

Cons:

The hotel is right on the corner of Harbor Boulevard and I-5. There can be quite a bit of freeway noise. Most of the rooms have a sound barrier that blocks it out. One of the families in our party had to switch rooms because of the noise. If you are a really light sleeper some of the rooms may be too loud.

Our air conditioner didn’t work very well. The staff was fairly helpful in getting it fixed.

No breakfast at all at the hotel, not even continental, but there are plenty of places close by to eat.

Travelled from New Zealand, was excited to stay here as the brochure looked very nice but I was disappointed with the vibe and facilities. The souveneir shop was a sad excuse and I do not recommend this Hotel to anyone.

This hotel was a great choice for our Disneyland vacation! The proximity to the park made it an easy walk. The rooms were clean and well maintained, and the beds were very comfortable. The only downside is due to being so close to the freeway, we were able to hear the car noise.

I have stayed everywhere from five star resorts to Motel 6s, and I was pleasantly surprised with this Howard Johnson! Although I wouldn't recommend this property for couples or travelers looking for five star service and amenities, it's definitely a must stay for families looking for a fun, comfortable, and affordable hotel during their Disneyland adventure! This retro hotel is a bit dated, but well maintained. It's main selling points are: 1) it's proximity to the Disneyland/California Adventure entrance (less than a five minute walk), 2) the hotel's own mini water park where parents can lounge by the pool or relax in the hot tub, all within a few steps of their children as they play on the water slides, splash in the kiddie pool, or squirt each other with water guns, 3) the arcade and convenience store in the main building, 4) and last but not least, the Keurigs in each room!!! Otherwise, check in/check out was quite easy, it's close to everything, there's a great restaurant across the street (Mimi's cafe), and the staff was kind enough to lend us a couple of strollers that were left behind by previous travelers. On a side note, I'd recommend looking into the highly affordable Super Shuttle (Supershuttle.com) which we took both to and from the nearby OC airport.

The only reason I didn't give the hotel a 5* is because of the location. We have never been to Disneyland before and didn't know what to expect in regards to the walking. They say it's a 7 minute walk but that's just to the entrance way into the park. There's an additional 7+ minutes walking from that entrance through the bus terminals, past the bag check and then into the gates. We ended up forking out the $7 taxi ride because our feet were exhausted by the end of the day.

Room: AWESOME! We were on the 6th floor facing the interstate we couldn't hear a thing. The kids loved sleeping in bunk beds and hubby and I loved our king sized bed (without any little bed hoggers to share with!) I wasn't a fan of having the entrance door on the kids side of the room, it was hard to sneak down to the convenience store while they were napping/sleeping and not wake them up.

Water Park: I wish we would have had more time for this. My daughter and I went once at 9 in the evening, our days were so long and we were usually exhausted by the end. We'd always plan our day and say we'd all hit the spray park together but it never worked out. Regardless, my 3yr old had a fantastic time on the slides and little pool.

We never got to check out the other pool.

Here's our video of our first day checking out the rooms http://youtu.be/w_0t4xc8zUk

Side Note - If you're hungry head over to Mimi's which is right across the street. Their AC was pumping, a nice cool place to relax and have some delicious food. Their soups and fantastic!!
