I was looking for a much needed getaway in southern California on a very tight budget. To save money, I also wanted to find a place with a kitchen. I had a friend down there look at the only places I could find online that provided a kitchen on what I could afford, and he called me after looking at them both and told me that one was dismal, cookie-cutter, in a depressing area... but that the other one was a real gem.
It sure was. My jaw dropped when I got there -- the whole place - but especially the room - was even better than the photos led me to hope for. What a radically different experience than the ordinary, same-ol' hotel/motel rooms you invariably find in the "budget" or even "midprice" categories. Uniquely decorated, in vibrant, earthy colors in a New Mexico/Native American/Mediterranean hybrid of warmth, lush greenery, dark woods, gentle tiled fountains... Spacious rooms with hand-painted cabinets, and walls, wall hangings, tile-and wood-framed mirrors, etc., a lovely adobe-tiled floor, full kitchen (full-sized refrigerator and stove, even!), leather couch, comfortable king bed -- and we chose the downstairs floor which added the incredible ambience of a high-walled garden patio, covered in vines and greenery and complete with a wall fountain!. Immense closet and drawer space, which was terrific for our eight-day stay.
The staff was very efficient, very responsive and friendly, and the manager went out of his way to be extremely helpful and gracious.
The location is fantastic if you have a car -- just a few minutes from Disneyland, and all shopping, and only a few blocks from the I-5. The shopping center across the street is no more, alas, but many other options very close by. A terrific, economical Mexican restaurant on the same lot just a few steps from the entrance, with a great discount given for hotel guests.
After having done special last-minute deals to get four-star-plus hotels in the $100 range, then getting hit with fees for parking, internet, etc., I can't begin to express what a delight it was to find something so unique, friendly, all-inclusive, spacious... and for a price that is truly astonishing.
Only one caveat: If you care about getting wi-fi connectivity (and good cellphone reception), don't stay on the ground floor. Stay on the third floor to overcome this small problem.
If you take comfort in the pedestrian sameness of the usual economy and mid-price hotel chains, have at 'em... but for something unique and delightful, you've got to try the Pepper Tree (and I understand its sister hotel the Lemon Tree just a short ways away is very similar -- same owner). This will be my hotel of choice in southern California from here on -- we're coming back next month with my teenager daughter and her friend to stay in one of their "apartment" rooms -- basically two of these amazing full-sized rooms connected, with the second room featuring a twin bed and a pull-out futon. The manager worked with me personally to make this second stay work -- and all guests get a $20-off coupon for a subsequent stay as part of their comment card.
BIG THUMBS UP!!!
