“Great stay”
Reviewed June 11, 2013

We stayed last week for the second time in 3 years at the Grand Californian. The stay started out late due to United Airlines having yet another delayed flight (my 11th in the last year. Boo on United), but quickly got better when Randy at the front desk warmly greeted us and made us feel so welcomed. We had a wonderful 5th floor room overlooking the expansive pool area. I love not only the Arts and Crafts style of the Grand Californian but also its proximity to the Disneyland, Downtown Disney, and California Adventure Parks--especially considering that you can get into the parks one hour early when you stay there, a huge advantage when considering the lines for rides. On our last day of three, United canceled our flight back to San Francisco, so we had to scramble for a last-minute room (double boo on United Airlines. So terrible their service); luckily Randy the front desk manager was able to accommodate us and we therefore stayed one more day. Really loved the whole trip (except for the United Airlines portion). Thanks for the great memories, Disney!

This is the third time we have stayed at this hotel since it first opened. The location is very good since you are literally right next to the parks but the hotel has started to show it's age. When the hotel had first opened it was, of course, new and clean. However, the rooms are not as clean as they used to be. The hotel staff didn't change the sheets once during our long stay and the sofa bed they gave us for our kids had old sheets in it from someone else's stay as well. When we opened the sofa bed the first night, there were reciepts from someone else mixed in the sheets. The housekeeping staff made the bed using the old sheets and didn't realise the recipts had been left in the bed inside the sheets. The tile in the bathroom around the tub had signs of mildew and there was sticky candy stuck to the carpet in our room. For the amount of money we paid to stay at this hotel, I was not impressed, nor do I think we will return.

Our stay at the Grand Californian Villas was a DVC stay which is a smaller portion of the hotel, containing only 50 rooms including the grand villas. For anyone who is a DVC member and is thinking of staying here I highly recommend it. This was our 2nd stay in a one bedroom villa and it so far is our favorite DVC room. The layout is quite nice and roomy with a small hallway leading to the master bedroom. The décor is lovely and the rooms are very well kept. The two bathrooms can't be beat. The kids have a shower/area to get ready and we had the master bath that has the whirlpool tub. We don't use the full kitchen, but is so nice to have the extra space. We order food from Vons and have it delivered to the room. So we have a full array of cereal, bagels, fruit for the morning and a few snacks for the rest of the day. Vons offers free delivery for first time customers and bell services will keep the groceries as well as store anything cold. Of course the location can't be beat. We have been lucky enough to get theme park views (floor 6 this trip!) and that is an amazing view. Although with grad nights going late into the night it can be loud. That didn't bother us, but it may be a deterrent to some. My only complaint about the 1 bed room villa is that the murphy style bed under the living room TV takes away a lot of storage space so there isn't a lot of room to put clothes for two people. My daughter kept her clothes in the cubby cubes on the entertainment center and my son in the small drawers next to the pull out sofa. Overall the Villas of the Grand Californian are amazing and we recommend staying to anyone who can snag a room.

This was our third time staying at GC. We have stayed at other hotels close to the park but have decided to stay at GC from now on. While the rooms at other hotels may be nicer and bigger, the convenient location is priceless. The first time staying here for us was in 2004 and we definitely noticed a little more wear and tear in the rooms this time around. We enjoyed taking a break at the pool from the afternoon park crowds.

It's all about location! My families been staying here since they opened. This hotel does not have lots of "Mickey" items in the rooms but the hotel is absolutely beautiful. We tend to request the rooms in the 300 block of the hotel with theme park views. Those rooms give you the best view of the River Rapids and Grizzly Peak. The 5th floor rooms are harder for kids to see people in the park because it's just above a short roof line. Floors 2, 3 and 4 are the better option. If there is ever a problem with your stay hotel management is always very accommodating. The hotel has a private entrance to California Adventure for it's guests. I highly recommend this hotel. Great service. We stay once a year and always check out BEFORE "Grad Nights" start. Please do your homework and find out when Grad Nights are planned before you book. Starting 2013, California Adventure is open all night to hundreds of graduating high school students and if you have a balcony with a park view room I'm sure it will not be enjoyable.

Room Tip: 300 block of the park view rooms, floors 2, 3 or 4. 5th floor is above a small roof line. It's a...

This was our third stay at Disney's Grand Californian since 2011. The hotel is impressive, but at the prices they charge to stay there, it should be, lol. And you absolutely cannot beat the proximity to the theme parks of the Disneyland Resort. If you want convenience and can afford upwards of $400 a night, this is the place to be. We spend a great deal of time in Disney's California Adventure, and we could be walking in that park within 5 minutes of leaving our room. And we find the rooms spacious enough for our needs (a family of four including two teens).

But on our two most recent stays (January 2013 and May 2013), I was absolutely disgusted at the condition of the carpeting in our room. The bottom of my feet were BLACK from walking on that carpet within 30 minutes of taking a shower. That is completely unacceptable. We didn't complain about it the first time, but on our most recent trip in May 2013, I called Guest Services our first night, and shared my feelings on the fact that the carpets were filthy. They steam cleaned the carpets in the room the next day (we were staying for 6 nights and I wanted clean carpets), but we should have never had to ASK to have that done. Housekeeping needs to do a better job of monitoring the carpeting, and putting the rooms on regular schedules for carpet cleaning. Filthy carpets in a room that costs as much as the rooms at the GC do is ridiculous.

Beyond that, the service is very good. Requests for additional towels, etc. were always handled quickly, and always followed up with a call to make sure we got what we needed.

Room Tip: Premium theme park view rooms are amazing.

We stayed on the Wednesday and Thursday before the Memorial Day weekend in May. The staff treated us with consideration and friendliness. How could they not? It's Disneyland and you expect the 'characters,' as all Disney employees are called, to always be top drawer. We had a courtyard room on the fourth floor. Quiet. The rooms aren't large but the small balcony was a nice touch. We added a third guest last minute and housekeeping quickly responded to several phone call requests. No charge for the 3rd guest and we easily switched from a Kingsize bed to two Queens during registration.
With 2-day Park Hopper tickets we strolled through the hotel right into California Adventure Park. What a joy avoiding the parking lots, trams, etc., though I wouldn't consider this expensive a hotel every time I come to Disney parks. The next day Disneyland was a brief enjoyable stroll away, no more than ten minutes!
We had room service for breakfast. I gave this hotel 4 stars for two reasons, very high price and the cheesy pastries. We ordered 3 continental breakfasts and received 2 nice chocolate pastries and six limp fruit filled glazed ones like the inexpensive store-bought type. That was disappointing. I expected better. Oddly, we had 3 large pats of butter. The server was excellent, pouring our coffee and attending to our needs. I'd asked for extra cream and he delivered 5 good sizes servings, He, somewhat, made up for the soggy pastries.
We went into the spa one night. It wasn't crowded, but, unfortunately, it was not hot enough for adults.
Still, I must again say all the staff did themselves proud and made for a good stay in this hotel.
