I have had pastrami at Kantor's in L.A. and at the Katz deli in NYC and they don't even come close to The Hat. A huge roll stuffed with pure, perfectly cooked pastrami dip. Add an order of the avo fries and just die happy!! Never disappoints.

I have tried pastrami sandwiches all over, yes, including New York, and nothing comes close to the Hat.
I am reviewing the one in Alhambra because it is the first, the original. But all of them make the same great sandwich

This is the first location of what has become a small southern California chain of pastrami shops. I've tried this one in Alhambra, as well as Monterey Park, Brea, Temple City and Pasadena. Don't opt for the roast beef. It seems like it's cut from a beef "loaf" kind of thing and it's a disappointment when you could have had the pastrami for the same price. The pastrami dip sandwich is what everyone comes for and what's recommended. The chili cheese fries are pretty good, but the portion is enormous. It can be shared by 2, but preferably at least 3 people. Langer's is the king of local pastrami choices, but the Hat, at less than half the price is a viable, less costly option. It's always crowded at lunch and late night which validates that people believe that it's worthwhile.

I have been to the hat many times. None of their sandwiches are to rave about. The fries, while plentiful, they need to cooked more and bland. The onion rings are too greasy that I could taste the oil in which they were fried. The pastrami, well is good, but is boiled. I like my pastrami put on the grill and crisped up. Lately, the prices has gone up significantly but the quality, somehow has deteriorated. Nice thing they now take credit cards and, expect that a meal for two there will be over $25.00 for a large order of fries, two pastrami sandwiches and two drinks. I think it is too expensive for what it is.

If you like pastrami sandwiches, this is one of the most legendary places in L.A. for it! And I can see why! The best pastrami I've ever had! Something else that they're famous for are their chili fries. Outstanding!!! Again, the best chili fries around!!! And the biggest too!! Their famous wet fries are pretty good too! The prices aren't all that cheap as they used to be, but it's not bad. The rest of the items on the menu are good, but not great. So just stick with the pastrami and chili fries!!
