“Two goats too cute”
Reviewed November 3, 2006

Writing a review for Fensalden Inn is rather tricky. The Inn is the kind of place that makes you feel like you are home. The possibility of interacting with other guests, build a cross-word puzzle and the tranquility of the area are indeed lovely.

But perhaps I was expecting more for the money. Our room was supposed to be a suite, but only had one bathroom, which was small and nothing luxurious. I love taking baths and so this was a disappointment.

The host was more than welcoming, however, the breakfast left a lot to be desired. Good food, but not enough the first day, and same for the second. Not sure if this was a temporary thing because the lady of the house was out, but my boyfriend and I were expecting more of a hearty breakfast (as advertised).

Perhaps the highlight of the trip were Nannette and Betta Louise, two pet goats that are nothing short of cute, and ate everything from clothes to wood, to the cabin!

I would go back to this place, but definitely have my reservations.

  • Liked — The quiet and the pet goats
  • Disliked — The little bit of food for breakfast and the small bathroom
  • Tips/Secrets — Request a hearty breakfast to host the night before

Linda and I had the memorable experience of staying at the Fensalden Inn bed and breakfast for eight unusual days celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary as well as visiting with our youngest daughter in Albion. Lyn and Bob our gregarious hosts extended gracious and rewarding hospitality. Our enjoyment surrounded the beauty of the Inn and the creatures that reside there; pygmy goats, hummingbirds, deer, and ducks. We had the pleasure of residing in the 'hippie' bungalow with all the benefits of the 60's. The gourmet breakfasts will be missed and so will the picturesque and unobstructed sights of the Pacific. We cannot truly wait for our future return. Richard & Linda Coulter - Chicago IL

My sweetie and I recently enjoyed a weekend at Fensalden. We stayed in the Headlands Room and enjoyed the ocean view from our private deck. The Inn is on a large property, with goats, ducks, and wild birds to keep you company while you walk around. The Inn is far enough away from the over-touristy Mendocino village to give you a peaceful visit, but close enough that you can visit any number of delicious restaurants with a quick drive.
Breakfasts are hearty and fun, as you eat as a group with the other visitors. Bob and Lyn, the inkeepers, are so friendly and lively that you all soon enjoy having breakfast together and talking about what everyone did the day before.
Bob and Lyn are fabulous--after a two night stay, they gave us big hugs goodbye and invited us back. It was like staying with family or friends! Can't wait for our next visit!

  • Liked — Peace and quiet with good scenery
  • Disliked — The shower in our room was awkward and only fit 1 person
  • Tips/Secrets — Save money--don't stay in Mendocino Village. You'll get more personal service in one of the small towns.

We have just returned from a wonderful trip to the Mendocino coast, California. Our hosts Lyn and Bob at the Fensalden Inn were terrific in helping us sort out what to do and see in Mendocino to make it a perfect vacation. We thoroughly enjoyed our room with it's private porch looking out over the meadow to the Pacific ocean.- a perfect spot for sipping wine and enjoying the sunsets. The Inn, it's garden and quiet location off Hwy 1 made us feel that we were truly away from the hustle and bustle of city living - the whole purpose of our trip. Breakfast time was a treat with Lyn's delicious cooked meals and of her storying telling , which had us all laughing . I highly recommend staying at Fensalden Inn for that special getaway.

We spent a wonderful weekend at the Fensalden Inn! The innkeepers, Bob & Lyn are delightful! The stories they kept telling us were so fun to listen to. The breakfasts were fabulous, served on beautiful dishes. The wine in the evening was excellent unlike other inns we have been to. The room was large and comfy and the views from the windows spectacular! We watched dozens of hummingbirds feeding by the window. Three deer fed in front of the same window in the evening. I have never stayed at a B& B where the innkeepers hugged us when we left! Definitely stay here!

We stayed midweek at The Fensalden Inn and it was an experience we plan to repeat soon. The Inn is right off route 1, a bit south of Mendocino, an area we know well. Our room was clean, cozy and comfortable with a nice balcony, gas fireplace and small fridge. Beautiful guest bathrobes were a special touch. We spent a good part of the late afternoon and evening relaxing in the spacious, eclectically furnished great room, enjoying wine, crackers, crab dip and nuts, all provided, and watching a profusion of hummingbirds feed just outside the window. It's often foggy in the Mendocino area in August and so it was this night but the fog has its charms. Best of all was the uninterrupted peace and quiet, enabling my wife and I to sit and read with comfort and concentration. The morning brought a delicious breakfast and a chance to chat with the Innkeepers, a pleasure in itself. Oh, and did I mention the price was right too? Definitely a discovery.

We stayed in the Hawthorne Suite at Fensalden and were so impressed with how beautiful the area was, not to mention the charm of the Inn as well as the incredibly friendly hosts, Bob and Lyn. Excellent food, great stories, and a very welcoming feel to the place really helped us enjoy our stay on California coast. If it is your first time in the area, Lyn was excellent with recommendations and information about things to see and do. I highly recommend Fensalden, as well as the north California coast, to anyone looking to relax and get away!
