“Fantastic”
Reviewed September 12, 2011

Wonderful romantic place to eat with a beautiful garden in the backyard overlooking the
ocean. The piano player added to the fun. The food was delicious with good portions
and the desert was excellent. Great service. To me its the best place to eat in the Mendocino area. Try to get a table by the window around sunset. I will be back.

“Long a favorite, starting to fade”
Reviewed September 12, 2011

I have enjoyed this restaurant for years and on my last visit I felt the bloom had started to fade. Our service was excellent and yet our meals were not extraordinary. The soup arrived rather luke warm. The salad had little blue cheese....things were just not up to
previous visits.

“A truly consistently wonderful restaurant”
Reviewed August 13, 2011

We have eaten at the Albion River Inn a number of times over the last 20 years.
We have never been disappointed. The service and food are outstanding. The view can't be
beat. Clearly, it is worth the money, if you want a memorable meal in a spectacular setting.

“Time travel--for better and worse”
Reviewed July 20, 2011

This restaurant gets five stars for the view (if you book a window table), a strong four stars for food and drink, and a weak three stars for inside-the-restaurant atmosphere. The setting, high above a picturesque cove, is grand--but do reserve early and ask for a table by the windows. The food runs from excellent (the fresh oysters), to good (main courses), to 1960s country-club (the time-warp heavy desserts). The restaurant tries to please both the grumpy oldster set and customers who actually care about food quality, but the result is schizophrenia in the kitchen. The establishment is worth a visit, if you're in the area for more than a few days. We would have enjoyed it far more, had it not been for the "Set the wayback!" impression that began when we walked in (and almost walked right back out). The host was dressed like a throwback Jersey mobster (fourth-class) and--far worse--the piano-player was thumping out "My Favorite Things" (a tune so monstrous it almost qualifies as the "Feelings" for the geriatric set) without taking his hoof off the sustain pedal (you can always tell when a piano man has no respect for his audience--he just holds that pedal down and goes on auto-pilot). The tables are packed together--you will learn more than you want to know about your temporary neighbors, while the grisly music continues. Now, as someone whose first career choice (and utter failure) was in music, I sympathize with musicians who end up playing in mid-range restaurants and backwater supper clubs--no young musician starts out with that as his or her goal. But giving Riz Ortolani's one international hit, "More," the theme from "Mondo Cane," the full, horrid 1960s lounge treatment twice within one hour approaches a crime against humanity. I tipped the piano man on the way out--I always do, out of commiseration--but he didn't add to the dining experience. Sorry to be so hard on the poor guy--but he needs to tighten up (working in a few cool-jazz numbers would have helped). If a musician doesn't respect the customers, he or she should at least respect the music itself.
