“Don't Listen to Negative Reviews”

We are long-time, returning guests at Albion River Inn. As to the negative reviews: ANYone can contract food poisening -- a physician should know that. Bad handwashing can happen at the Ritz! We have eaten at Albion (New Years Eve and other times) and always had a wonderful meal, the ambiance is casual but beautiful. As to the rooms: yes, some of them have been upgraded, some are older. But the location and view cannot be beat. The housekeepers are wonderful: they lay a new fire in the fireplaces every night. As to the foghorns: we've slept peacefully -- the foghorns are the music of the Coast. People who complain, I would say, just ask the "sky" and don't understand this is a fairly remote location. We were even there one New Years weekend when the power was out: of course, we could know read, but the dining room was lit by candles and our emergency lanterns (in each room) reminded us of camping. I would recommend Albion River Inn to anyone: You just need to remember that it's a special place, a unique place and not the Top of the Mark in San Francisco.

The Abion River Inn only get better as times goes by...
My wife and family have stayed and watched Albion River Inn grow from humble beginnings to a star on the Mendocino coast.
From the the very beginning,it's restaurant was good, through the years it has become outstanding and award winning. Most of the rooms are bungalows, all have fantastic views of the oceans and cliffs. Most have decks. The rooms are wonderfully understated; wood burning fireplaces, great beds, linens, bath towels, robes,& etc. The bathrooms are larger than most hotel rooms and cleaner than an autoclave. You find yourself shaving or bathing, all the while watching the craching waves through the huge windows. There is a breakfast provided for guests; it's wonderful. The management and staff welcome you and make you feel welcome. Also the restaurant staff is quite wine knowledgeable, so is the owner. You will probably see him there. He is a hands-on guy. When near Mindocino, CA, stay here!

My husband and I stayed in cottage #1, and it was just lovely!! Immaculately clean, large, and brand new inside. We loved sitting in front of the fireplace and enjoyed the complimentary wine, while we listened to the faint and distant fog horn (which brought a nice romantic "coastal" atmosphere to these cottages perched high on the cliff). We also enjoyed the full breakfast in the morning, while we watched the whales migrate. This was the best night of sleep I've ever had. We can't wait to go back!! Yes, indeed, it is a little $$ for the nicest rooms, but well worth every penny, as this is by far the nicest inn along the Mendocino Coast.

My husband and I stayed at the Albion River Inn for a portion of our honeymoon. The location of the Inn is absolutely breathtaking. It's also not for the driving faint of heart (lots of 15 mph turns along ocean cliffs). But if you're looking for somewhere to "escape" for the weekend, this is the perfect place. And we do mean escape - no TVs in the room or cell phone service.

The rooms are spacious and well appointed. There are lots of nice details - adirondack chairs on the deck, a half bottle of wine left in the room nightly (champagne on our first night), firewood stocked outside the room every day (we built a fire every night), lush bathrobes, a great selection of coffee and tea.

The breakfasts are very good - we especially loved the local coffee. We also had dinner at the restaurant our first night and had a wondeful meal. In fact, we wish we had returned, as we found many of the so-called "premier" restaurants in Mendocino (MacCallum House, Cafe Beaujolais) disappointing.

We will say that the foghorn is a bit annoying. We never were able to completely tune it out at night, but we used the earplugs provided and were able to sleep well.

Overall, a great place to stay for a romantic weekend or for anyone looking for a weekend escape.

Albion River Inn is the best place for a honeymoon. The cabin like room are right on the cliff overlooking a picturesque cove. We can watch the sunset from the comfortable king size bed. The room had a bath for two. The service was amazing. The room was spotless with a half bottle of wine and two glasses, fire wood in the fireplace preped for igniting. No TV. Ment for lits of time to read, enjoy the view and our time together. highly recommend this place for a romantic weekend or a quite time away from the rat race.

My husband and I have traveled extensively. We prefer boutique hotels and small inns. The Albion Inn was dream like. The weather was fabulous and our room overlooked the Pacific Ocean. The room included a deck with Adirondack chairs and a fireplace with lots of wood to burn. The restaurant was okay but the service and people could not have been friendlier or nicer. If you are there you must stay there!!!

When my wife and the wife of a friend booked the Albion River Inn as the mid-portion of our California trip I was thrilled. We started at the Harvest Inn in St. Helena (wonderful!!), and wound our way North with plans to head back through Sonoma. The brochure was great even though it seemed odd that you had to pre-pay in full. We checked into the cute cottages and looked out upon a spectacular view. Then we found out why they provided complimentary ear plugs in the bedside basket. There was a deafening foghorn that went off every 20 seconds, day and night. You could not even sit comfortably on the porch. This was nowhere near the peaceful, tranquil romantic spot I imagined.

Nonetheless we had reservations made six months prior at the award winning restaurant (we love good food and fine wine). When we arrived if they had sat us any closer to the kitchen we could have made our own salads. I guess everyone else had reservations for more than six months. We were actually doing Ok until about 3 hours later when my wife received the wrath of the cream-based soup she had with dinner (only she had the soup). Food poisoning raised its ugly head and lowered hers as she slept on the cool tile floor of the bathroom and tried to block out the deafening fog horn.

She did survive but barely as we tried to make the trip down winding route 1 the next day. My traveling friend and myself are both physicians so I think we know food poisoning when we see it. I explained the situation to the desk clerk who simply didn't give a ----! I guess he thought we were trying to get the bill marked down.

We just returned from a truly wonderful week in St. Helena again at the beautiful Harvest Inn. We love returning to places that make us feel welcome. Never ever ever ever will we set foot in the Albion River Inn again. God help those who venture into Foghorn Hell!

Thank you for your review. We apologize for your uncomfortable stay and that your needs were not met. We are disappointed that we (meaning the management) weren't given the chance to correct them properly. The owners usually deal with issues like these personally.
As for the fog horn...It is out of our hands and in the U.S Coast Guards. Quite a few or our guests find it a relaxing change from city noise; car alarms and sirens. And for the guest who isn't fond of it we do provide the ear plugs.
Once again we do apologize for your inconvienence and hope you will try the Albion River Inn again.
