“Gradually going downhill...”

This was our second dining experience at Cafe 14. While the food is good, the portion sizes and the overall taste for the price is not worth it. Our first time, we ordered the Steak Diane & a peppercorn steak. The latter of the two was greatly over-seasoned and not cooked appropriately. While our appetizers (tuna tartare and salad) were very good, the steak was not worthy of the price. For our second visit, we opted not to do appetizers as we ordered too much food the first time. We ordered the Steak Diane and the rack of lamb. The rack of lamb consisted of 3 exceedingly small, lolly-pop sized chops, The entre itself was $29 and not worth even half that price. The portion was much too small and the taste was mediocre. A true disappointment! The guests sitting next to us made the same comment when one of them received their lamb. Although the service is very good, I can't say that I'd recommend this place for the food.

“Great food, good atmosphere in a friendly foodie place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2010

Very good menu with variety of selections and small plate appetizers. The service was solid and the wine list well chosen. The menu had subtle flourishes (home made sausage with lamb chops and barissa) and the wine was priced moderately. Home made ice cream for dessert was a nice touch. This is one of the best restaurants in the suburbs of LA, with big city food quality but also prices. Atmosphere is not the draw, but a patio that seats about 30 is a nice touch. For a romantic dinner/celebration with friends it's a great choice. Owner was present and talking with the customers which was a nice touch. A bit of a hidden gem for when one wants food that's a clear cut above.

“Not exactly a 14 more like a 7”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2008

We made a booking for 6.30pm on a Sunday through Open Table. When we arrived there were only 2 other diners, eventually another table was taken but as we left at 9.15pm it was obvious the restaurant was going to be empty all evening.
We dined inside, very neutral decor, small tables, not much atmosphere, but to be fair it could have been because the restaurant was empty.

The wine menu was good however the food menu was limited. There were no vegetarian options for the vegetarian in our group, only fish or red meat. This meant two appetizers, which are very small.

The frites with truffle oil and cheese were a nice start, the scallops good (although there are only 2 scallops) and the salad was very ordinary. The waiter confused the order and the wrong salad was deivered, so we had to wait for a few minutes while this was sorted out.

Entrees were a mixed bag. The New Zealand lamb rack was cooked to perfection and the accompanying mash and vegetables were well presented. The Duck was a decent sized portion and again well presented. The Bouillabaise was unfortunately a let down, more of a reddish fish soup than an unctuous seafood stew. The food was very plain, reminding us of school dinners. Not many herbs, spices or blends of tastes were used.

Desserts picked were the Banana Bread Pudding, couldn't taste the banana and very stodgy. Chocolate slice, bitter and the best dessert ordered. The special homemade ice-cream was unavailable even though the waiter included it in his Specials recital, so we had to settle for store bought Hagen Daz. The desserts were mixed up when delivered by the waiter so we had to swap plates around.

A selection of coffees were ordered, then another waiter came over to take our orders again as our waiter had forgotten the order and had not written it down. Not exactly brilliant service, we expected much more from Cafe 14. For a restaurant pricing entrees up to $40 they should ensure the staff are trained.

We enjoyed our evening but we will not return again. The service and the food are not up to the standards of other local restaurants such as Leilas or Fins.

“Best Restaurant in Area”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 9, 2008

Came here while staying at the Renaissance Hotel across Hwy 101. It is located tucked in the corner at the back of a strip mall and at first we thought we went to the wrong place because it was hard to find. Thank goodness we did find it. This is a family run business. The chef owner came to greet us - apparently his wife is the dessert chef and his father was seating people. This is a small place but we ate outside on the patio with a running waterfall. It was very nice. The food was excellent new American cuisine. I had the pork loin dinner, which was very flavorful. They have a small bar and decent wine list. I would definitely come back, as this is one of the best restaurants that we ate at while in the area.
