The Amsterdam Cafe may be the best restaurant in Auburn. They do not accept reservations, but we were lucky to get seated immediately. We ordered the house cabernet at $21 a bottle, and it was a great value. The owner is a wine aficionado, and according to our waitress, he visited a vineyard in Napa Valley, worked with them to create the wine, and then created a private label for the restaurant. It was excellent.
The menu at Amsterdam has items at a wide variety of prices. The lunch menu ($7-15) is available all day; the dinner menu is pricier ($20-30). All choices I have sampled are excellent values. The chef prepares specials of the day, which merit special consideration. My daughter and I had New York strip steaks, medium rare, with a balsamic reduction glaze, and they were delectable. The sides were grilled asparagus along with potatoes, bleu cheese parmesan au gratin, excellent. The potatoes were sliced very thin, al dente, and it was marvelous. My wife had yellowfin pan-seared tuna, sushi grade, with bok choy and fried rice. She considered licking the plate after she had eaten everything, but thought better.
Our waitress was very helpful in describing the dishes and telling us about the wine. All in all, an excellent dinner, and a restaurant with my unqualified recommendation.
