“Delightful, delicious, delectable”

The Amsterdam Cafe may be the best restaurant in Auburn. They do not accept reservations, but we were lucky to get seated immediately. We ordered the house cabernet at $21 a bottle, and it was a great value. The owner is a wine aficionado, and according to our waitress, he visited a vineyard in Napa Valley, worked with them to create the wine, and then created a private label for the restaurant. It was excellent.

The menu at Amsterdam has items at a wide variety of prices. The lunch menu ($7-15) is available all day; the dinner menu is pricier ($20-30). All choices I have sampled are excellent values. The chef prepares specials of the day, which merit special consideration. My daughter and I had New York strip steaks, medium rare, with a balsamic reduction glaze, and they were delectable. The sides were grilled asparagus along with potatoes, bleu cheese parmesan au gratin, excellent. The potatoes were sliced very thin, al dente, and it was marvelous. My wife had yellowfin pan-seared tuna, sushi grade, with bok choy and fried rice. She considered licking the plate after she had eaten everything, but thought better.

Our waitress was very helpful in describing the dishes and telling us about the wine. All in all, an excellent dinner, and a restaurant with my unqualified recommendation.

“Adorable Amsterdam Cafe”

Gourmet food at great prices. Great for a lunch group. They have expanded the room and it is very popular with faculty and townspeople and students. I love their stuffed mushrooms.

“Good Place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 12, 2012

I've had decent meals here, but never anything to gush about like many of the other reviews tell of. The last time I went the medium rare filet was cooked medium and certainly took away from the steak. Calamari was very good, but the fried green tomatoes are nowhere near as good as at another pricy restaurant. They were 3 slabs and I've made better at the house. My wife's triple tail was good, but really the sauce was great and the fish was only an accessory to that sauce. By itself, the fish would have been nothing to mention.

Service was adequate, but not great. This was due to the fact the server was running around serving several tables and appeared to be over extended. You had to hold your glass up conspicuously to get a refill.

“Delicious and different”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 5, 2012

This is a great place to go at night for special occasions or at lunch for a delicious and different meal in a fun environment. I haven't had anything bad on the menu - the crabcake and avocado sandwich with homemade sweet potato fries is legendary. This is a must-try when coming to the Auburn-Opelika area.

“Great Evening - Outside Under the Spray Fans”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2012

It can get hot in Alabama. We had a wonderful evening on the side patio at the Amsterdam Cafe, as they had installed misting fans which made the otherwise hot, sulty Southern evening most pleasant. The food was great and service was top notch. This is a wonderful restaurant with a varied menu and a wide variety of beer and wine. I would describe the menu as Old South meets California chic, with a little New Orleans thrown in. I had the crab cake avocado sandwich and the southwest soup. My wife had the fried green tomatoes. I recommend all.
