“Great history, lobby, location”
Reviewed September 12, 2011

Martin Luther King finished his 1963 "I had a Dream" speech at the Willard and that's only the beginning of its history. On the eastern corner of the White House, the Willard has so much history there's a museum in the back. President Grant used to hide from job seekers at the White House in the Willard's lobby. When they started pestering him there Grant referred to them as those "damned lobbyists." Hence the term lobbyists.

The Willard is top-notch at every level from its downtown location to the best lobby in Washington. It's especially magical at Christmas. It cost a few dollars, but pamper yourself at the Willard.

My wife and I always make it a point to stay in the Willard after flying to DC from the West Coast. It is only a few minutes from the Reagan airport, which is a real plus and the hotel maintains a very excellent standard of hospitality. On our last trip in August we ran into weather delays so arrived rather late in the evening. Our luggage was whisked to our room while we went to the French Cafe for dinner. This Cafe was added a few years ago to our delight as we don't want to dress up for a formal dinner after a long trip and now we don't have to leave the hotel. The food is very good but, of course, relatively expensive as this is DC. But the convenience is worth the price. As always, I really like the large marble bathrooms as I am well over 6 feet and need the room. I will continue to recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Washington.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the Willard Rooms. Corner location with extra space and larger bathroom.

This hotel has an interesting history and is in a perfect location for exploring Washington.
The breakfast is taken at Le Cafe du Parc, it was busy during our stay with alot of non-residents which did not make it a relaxing experience-too many people were seated too close to each other. It rained most days so people were unable to sit outside to eat.
If your room rate includes breakfast you are given $50 per room to spend at Le Cafe or it can be used towards breakfast served in your room.
Had a corner room with outstanding views to The White House in one direction and all the city's landmarks leading towards The Pentagon in the other direction. It was excellent, we could see for miles.
The staff were helpful, particularly the concierge team.

While we live in the greater DC area, we stayed here on 4th of July because it’s the closest hotel to the Mall area/fireworks, and we were looking for somewhere we could stay that would allow us a convenient spot to go to before and after the event so we could enjoy the day without battling the crowds and traffic. The Willard had always been my favorite hotel in DC. It’s incredibly beautiful in a historic, classy way. While I had never stayed here before, I had eaten here many times over the years, including many holiday brunches. While we had a great 4th of July, the hotel definitely proved to be a disappointment in many ways. The room was okay, pretty though not spectacular, but what was surprising was how dirty it was! I was shocked to even find what looked like wine stains on the sheets. I called the front desk, and they did replace them pretty fast. I had ordered a cot for son but hours later it still hadn’t come. When I called about it, they eventually left it in the room but didn’t even bother to lay it flat. It was standing up in the room. I’ve never had that before. We went to eat but the restaurant didn’t have any children menus so we ended up just getting snacks from the café. Definitely our worst experience at the hotel was breakfast the next morning! They have a buffet breakfast that on the surface looked nice but first we had to go through a million plates to find a clean one! They had precooked waffles and my son took one. But when we went to eat it, he found that it hadn’t been cooked thoroughly and there was batter coming out! Yuck! We went and took another but it turned out it was the same! So, I got the attention of one of the cooks and showed it to him. I asked if he could just make my son a pancake. He said he would. Well, when we got it, as it would turn out, the pancake was also oozing batter! So, I took it back and he agreed that it was oozing batter and they would make another one! They did and guess what; to our amazement (and at this point the table next to us) it was oozing batter again!! It was beyond gross and unbelievable!! So, I got up again and this time my path crossed what appeared to be a manager. I expressed my frustration with our oozing batter breakfast experience and he said he would have another pancake made. Eventually, we got one. This time they were taking no chances. It was paper thin!! At this point, my son no longer had any interest in eating pancakes. So, it was a tiring and extremely disappointing breakfast experience!! I think I was especially surprised that a place like the Williard would have such low standards. The best part of our stay was when we were in the lobby, and Little Richard walked right by us with his entourage. He was on in his way to performing at the National 4th of July Concert. That was very cool! However, overall, I was disappointed in the hotel. Its best assets are its beautiful lobby and exterior, and one doesn’t need to stay there to enjoy those. If we decide to stay downtown again, I am definitely looking into the J.W. Marriott next door!

The Willard is in a great position for tourists. Close to the White House, museums and subway. The bed was excellent, nice soft towels, room a little dark (due to lack of lighting) and the bathroom could do with a little updating (I guess that depends which room you book however). Enjoyed room service, found the cafe a little lacking in atmosphere and the outside tables not very comfortable. This was the only hotel on our trip which charged for Internet, even the trains had Internet for free. It is an historic and beautiful hotel however and we enjoyed the fact we could walk everywhere.

The hotel is just east of the WH and a very short walk to the Mall and monuments. Great location! Rooms are nice, clean and reasonably roomy. We have stayed at the Willard several times in the past and the service and atmosphere remain elegant yet comfortable. Always look forward to our return.

While recently visiting Wash., DC to view colleges and have a family vacation, we stayed at the Willard InterContinental. The location is fabulous - access to main attractions very convenient. The White House and the Mall are a short walk from the hotel.
The hotel staff is friendly and attentive. The rooms are well appointed, clean, and a comfortable size. For those who enjoy pampering, there is an Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa located in the hotel. The Cafe de Parc Restaurant, also part of the hotel, has delicious food and a lovely breakfast buffet. We even ordered room service after a busy day of sightseeing. The service was impeccable and the food was tasty and well presented. The Metro is close by, too! We will definitely stay at the WIllard again!
