This hotel is probably the classiest way to overnight in Washington, DC. If you don't know what a power breakfast is, you sure will find out here. There is no better place to invite your business contacts for breakfast or to entertain someone in the confidential atmosphere of the "Off the Records Bar". The Barboursville Chardonnay Reserve 2010 is by the way a great wine to end a busy day! All in all a great experience with a very personalized service and the attention to detail. I am visiting this hotel now for over 10 years on a regular basis and have never been disappointed.

Room Tip: Chose a room "overlooking the White House". The Junior Suites are very pleasant.

The Hay Adams has an old world charm to it. Attentive and generous in its service, we were blessed with a room overlooking the White House.

The room was small but enough for 2 nights. The bathroom could do with a little modernisation as it was a tight fit for 2 to move in at the same time.

There is obviously a lot of history associated with this hotel. It's not a hotel for everyone, but if you like the charm of yesteryear with modern service you will enjoy it.

We ate in the hotel restaurant 2 nights and it was both affordable with quality service and food.

Room Tip: Join Leading Hotels to obtain a likely room upgrade (based on availability).

This is a historic hotel in a great location. The location means that the banquet rooms on the 9th floor have a great view of the White House and Washington Monuments...even a terrace to view them. I attended a meeting here and was also impressed with the service provided by the people who provided food, drinks, etc. Of course, the banquet food was uninspiring, but one can live with that. Now a reality check:

DO NOT STAY HERE. I had the opportunity to see two rooms...both filled with a moldy smell when you clicked on the air conditioning. Want creaky floor boards? This is your kind of place. And, the rooms do not in any way measure up to typical size standards for a luxury hotel...even in a crowded city like D.C. After sampling those two rooms, I was offered the chance to play room roulette and get transferred to another room again. No thanks, I said. And, I simply made a reservation at the much superior JW Marriott a few blocks away. No muss, no fuss there. And it is truly a luxury hotel.

Bottom line: If you have an opportunity to attend a meeting at this very old historic hotel, please do. It is like going to a museum in some respects. But, please let me repeat, DO NOT STAY HERE!

Dear ActiveTraveler1,
We are delighted you enjoyed the view on Top of the Hay, but are very concerned about the comments regarding your stay with us.
Please accept our apologies for a less than expected room experience and moldy smell. I will follow up with the appropriate department heads for remediation.
We certainly would like to make this up to you and ask that you contact me so I can manage your next reservation to make sure you receive an appropriate and upgraded accommodation.

Sincerely,

Hans Bruland

I stayed here for only one night on a business trip, and it was one of the most enjoyable stays I've ever had in a hotel.

You simply can't beat the location. The whole place has an air of history and grandeur to it, while still feeling fresh and current (many grand old hotels start feeling a bit tired). Staff are very attentive and professional.

Can't find a single fault and would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the White House and higher up in the building (I was on level 6) make for a fantastic waking up experience.

This was a very special, wonderful experience for us. We spent three nights, had several excellent meals there, and were not . Of note, I needed a quiet place to make a phone call on a hard line before we could check in, and ended up using their wonderfully equipped business centre for over an hour. This is a beautiful hotel, close to everything.
