The Good: Really helpful, efficient desk staff. Easy check in and good service. Spacious, clean and very functional rooms----minimalist--with some of the Kimpton colorful flair--- but all you need for a business trip. Excellent central location near lots of shops and restaurants. Their awesome staff really should have more pleasant surroundings to work in. Which leads me to the bad...

The Bad: This hotel has the tiniest lobby possible in a hotel. AND they have the evening wine hour there in the evenings which means guests checking in at this time are practically tripping over other guests and their wine glasses as they enter the hotel.

The hall ways and elevators are really musty and damp smelling. The public areas are so underwhelming that I actually thought the taxi dropped me off at a back service entrance when I arrived. But no---this is really the front entrance that smells dodgy and is about 12 feet wide.

This was a business trip and my hotel was covered, but I really would not want to pay $200++ for a hotel that has no fitness center or pool.

The Ugly: Stay away from the rooms in the back of the hotel which face dumpsters, parking lots, and alleys as well the grimy "under renovation" backs of homes in a gentrifying neighborhood. Not a pretty sight to wake up to at all.

Room Tip: Pick one that's higher up and facing the front of the hotel

Dear Anthropologie, I loved the good of your visit. The bad though is want we need to fix. Yes you are correct the lobby and public space areas are small and cozy. We are not the grand large hotel compared to others. Many of our Guests love this fact. It creates a home away from home feeling. But if you're looking for a large lobby, large public space and seating areas you may be interested in our Hotel Palomar just 3 blocks from us. We pride ourselves on the friendly and personal level of service the Madera provides. I thank you for your review and do hope you get a chance to visit our the Madera and the other Kimpton Hotels in the future. Sincerely, Modi Ahmed General Manager

Wife and I have stayed at this hotel several times before. we like the location, the neighborhood, and the nearby Metro. I liked the milk and cookies they used to serve at night, but this is not currently offered.
The check-in was challenging. They were sold-out. when we got to the room, my wife noticed a few inches of standing water in the tub. not a big deal, but I had to open the stopper by putting my hand in the standing water. Water looked clean, so not a biggie. My wife tried to call the front desk, but the room phone was not working. Also, the window did not close properly, and it was very windy. There was a loud whistle from the window. Really really loud. Our view was of the back and the service entrance. Lastly, our room was also next the ice maker. ughh.
The attitude at the front desk was mostly of "oh well too bad, nothing we can do." At $180 for the 1st night, I thought this sucked. LUCKILY, a handyman was able to address the whistling from the window. He also fixed the room phone. We had reservations for 3 days, so we saw the same fellow at the front desk various time and he seemed very standoff-ish. Perhaps we made him uncomfortable from the 1st night's experience. Other member of the staff were very friendly.
When checking out, a new person at the front desk asked how our stay was, so we told him. He offered us some compensation. He really seemed to care. He even said that when they get another cookie vendor, they will offer the milk and cookies again. He seemed to really shine when it came to customer service. As a result, we will probably continue to stay here in future visits to DC.

Room Tip: Better to face the front. back faces the service entrance and you can hear trucks loading/unloading in the AM.

Dear pilozm, so sorry for the poor start to your visit. We ensure that all rooms are fully inspected for cleanliness and functioning standards before we put a guest in them. So sorry we missed the few things you mentioned. I am glad the service that was provided by the Front Desk Manager on your check out was stellar and will make you return. We don't want to lose a valuable guest like yourself. Thanks for the feedback and please do reutrn. Sincerely, Modi Ahmed General Manager

If you travel with your dog or cat, you will like this hotel. If you have allergies to animal dander, stay away. This is a pet-friendly chain that allows dogs to hang around the lobby with their owners, with animals often sitting on upholstered chairs in lobby. Expect to share an elevator with someone's pet and be prepared for the possibility of dander, pet hair (or fleas) where you least expect it. It is not u common to hear a yapping dog going at it every time someone walks near the unit where the dog is staying...especially if the animal is left alone while owners are out.
The hotel itself is decent. Good location, five minute walk to DuPont circle and Foggy Bottom metros. Rooms are nicely furnished with comfy beds, flat screen TV, etc. but generally the rooms are small and bathrooms tiny. The lobby of the hotel is a small corridor about 10x30 feet that leads from front entrance to a small check in desk. There is no real lobby to hang out in or meet with people. It is a decent hotel if you are ok sharing it with pets...other than that, it is not so impressive and you might get more bang for your buck elsewhere. I also need to add that the hotel neglected to make a requested wake-up call one morning. Fortunately we had a back up alarm. This is not what you would expect from a top notch establishment. They are doing sewer line construction along New Hampshire avenue, so if you don't want to hear heavy machinery in the morning, ask for a room that doesn't face the main street.

Room Tip: Construction of sewer lines along New Hampshire brings a lot of early morning noise from heavy machinery. Ask for room facing other sides of building if you want to sleep in. This is not the place for you if you have allergies to dogs and cats at this pet-friendly hotel.

Dear Olga_From_Berkeley, we so sorry your visit "went to the dogs." Yes we are a pet friendly Hotel, we do love our 4-legged friends but of course need our 2-legged Guests happy as well. We do strive to our dogs to our pet floor and do deep cleaning of any rooms a pet has been in. I apologize this wasnt to your liking. I also do apologize the city is doing construction in front of the Hotel. It's hard to slow progress but thankfully it is soon done. I appreciate your comments and thanks for the reivew, Modi Ahmed General Manager.

As always this Kimpton hotel did not disappoint. It is in a great location near Dupont Circle and walkable to other attractions. The rooms are a good size and though the bathroom was small it did not detract from the room overall. We had a corner room and some of the rooms have balconies, which are rare in DC. The lobby is small which makes the complementary wine hour quaint. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Corner rooms are probably larger and the rooms with balconies are nice.

Great hotel in great location! Wonderfully helpful and fun staff in both the hotel and the restaurant. Loved the sense of humour of the animal print bathrobes! Also really loved the two massive beds, the separated office area, the drinks in the afternoon and the closeness to book shops, bars, metro stations and fabulous breakfast restaurants. Wanted to try out the other Kimptons ............. And I will one day!
