Interesting hotel but whether you'll like it or not depends on what you're looking for.
Pluses were: large size room plus dressing room plus kitchen; beds, pillows and sheets were comfy; there is a restaurant on-site and food was generally good; hotel is not new but seemed clean and cared for; 24-hours CVS next door
Minuses were: "kitchen" meant sink, fridge, and cooktop but no
microwave was provided-we asked for one, but it was not forthcoming-- or any kind of pots& pans (housekeeping did bring a large pot and some cups when we asked); restaurant service ranged from excellent to lousy; limited menu and serving hours (no lunch on weekends); hotel is far from attractions (other than a few monuments) and no restaurants at all in area other than the one in the hotel; mirror-image lobbies in two sides of the hotel are confusing and it can be a long hike to the room (through the garage) from E street to the tower on F street; zero tourist information available from front desks, though they will call cabs. The first time we ate in the restaurant, the service and food were impeccable and we looked forward to eating there again. Three nights later, ordered wine and got a glass with lipstick on it and it went downhill from there ( kitchen substituted an icky vegetable for the one ordered, no apology or offer of something else; meat arrived rare, not medium; waitress seemed annoyed when we asked about dessert; service was indifferent as a whole-- to the point that the evening was a let-down.)
My pet peeve with housekeeping is when they don't bring toilet paper daily; that happened here. You should not have to ask for toilet paper!
Overall, would look at other options before re-booking here.

I stayed in this hotel for 2 nights during the holiday season and have to say I was quite taken back by the quality of the suite. For approx £80 a night (granted that included an internet discount) I was suprised at the sheer size of the suite and facilities within it. A very comfortable stay, friendly staff and a very nice and reasonably priced restuarant (when you eventually find it that is!!)

Our family of four (two teens) stayed for five days in a Stateroom Suite in the north tower with entrance onto F Street.

While the room furniture and accessories were a little dated, everything was perfectly functional and very clean. (I find it interesting that a 60-year-old room in a New England B&B is "quaint" but a 20-year-old room in a city is "dated"). The quality and cleanliness of the beds rivaled any hotel I have ever stayed in - very comfortable with ample pillows, clean linen and extra towels. There are no pay-per-view movies but TV has more than enough cable channels. Our room had wired, free Internet. The hotel public areas (lobbies, corridors, etc.) were well maintained and clean. Staff were friendly and helpful. Our room had a microwave which I think you have to ask for specifically.

The location is great. Located in the George Washington University (GWU) area, it is a very safe area - mainly fraternity and sorority houses in the neighborhood. State Department is across the street and an embassy is next door. It is five easy blocks to the Foggy Bottom Metro. There is 24-hour CVS/Pharmacy next door to the E Street entrance. It has necessities like meds, milk, OJ, cereals, make-up, etc.

Restaurants in the area are limited. Sizzling Express is buffet-style restaurant about 2 blocks away. It is reasonable family fare. There are sandwich places, Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin Robbins in GWU Ivory Tower about 3 blocks away. We also ate at the Tonic about 2 blocks away but it is not for young families as it's main business is a GWU lounge. Food was very good though.

Hotel is easy walk to Lincoln, Vietnam, Korean and WWII memorials. It is 5 blocks from the White House. It is a bit longer but do-able walk to Smithsonian museums.

Overall-
comparing the hotel's rates to the popular brands
the excellent location
the quality of the rooms and service
this hotel is excellent value for the money.

Have just come back to the UK after a road trip through the SE corner of USA and thought the State Plaza was pretty good for a city centre hotel, especially after some of the other hotels we stayed in along the trip. As mentioned by other travellers, there are two towers, we stayed in the North Tower.

So, first the not so great bits -
No wireless internet, only wired but it is free.
No easily accessible vending machines (but there is a 24 hour CVS right next door to the South Tower, which sells far more stuff than a vending machine would anyway)
To go between the towers can be a pain but the reception in the North Tower is staffed most of the day
No microwave in the kitchen
No bar or lounge area, although described here as a hotel, the State Plaza is actually just a series of suites, think of it more as an apartment block and you won't be disappointed.

Now the good bits -
Price, like a lot of cities, DC can be expensive, this place was reasonably priced for a city and for it's location.
Location, yes it's six blocks from the Metro but DC is very easy to walk around, the State Plaza makes this easy, it is only 3 or 4 blocks from the White House and most of the tourist attractions are within a 15-20 minute walk.
The room or should I say suite, was spacious and clean, it had a separate kitchen, dressing room and bathroom, the decor was simple and clean, maybe a little dated but not tatty.
The beds were fantastically comfortable, more pillows than you know what to do with and generally great, we both slept very well.
Staff were helpful and very friendly and polite, they brought us extra towels when we were caught in a rain shower without us asking and provided us with extra coffee when requested.

Overall we were very pleased with our stay at the State Plaza and would recommend it to others.

We for the most part enjoyed our stay at the State Plaza. The room was plenty big enough for 2 adults and 2 kids. The staff waskind and accomadating, although the front desk was not to helpful for travelers. There are no brochures or info regarding dc in the lobby you have to ask the person at the counter for any info. Parking is a joke good luck if you want to drive your car anywhere and they are fully booked. They are NOT located near any attractions in dc you have to walk half way across dc to get anywhere other than the monuments.
Also a forwarning for any migraine sufferers or any human who wants to sleep in, the curtains do NOT close nor are they darkened. We were up at 5am everyday with the sun on our vacation how fun. Luckily we finagled a contraption to close the curtains. Also the building next door which seems unoccupied likes to leave their lights on 24/7 again no curtain closing was very frustrating.
This hotel is very low key and uneventful which was nice after being in the crowds it is quiet. Just don't look for a full nights sleep.
There are a lot of homeless people in this area as well. No-one ever bothered us but was hard to explain to kids.
